Rajasthan, Jan 19: IAS officer Ummul Kher defied all odds in her quest to crack the toughest UPSC examination.
Ummul, originally from Pali in Rajasthan, found herself in the Trilokpuri slum of Delhi. Despite being born in Rajasthan, her family's move to Delhi for a livelihood meant a challenging environment. Battling a fragile bone disorder that resulted in 16 fractures and eight surgeries, Ummul's determination remained unshaken.
Financial constraints posed a significant hurdle to realizing her dream of becoming an IAS officer. Undeterred, Ummul began giving tuitions to children, utilizing the proceeds to fund her education. Even though her family did not support her pursuit of higher education, Ummul's determination led her to elope from home and reside in a slum. Here, she continued to give tuitions to meet her educational expenses.
Supported by an NGO, Ummul completed her education up to the 10th grade. Despite facing family disapproval, she pursued further studies, securing an impressive 91% in her 12th class. Graduating from Gargi College, Ummul continued her academic journey at JNU, completing her MA.
Simultaneously, Ummul embarked on the rigorous preparation for the UPSC examination, eventually clearing it with flying colors. Her perseverance and academic achievements earned her acceptance into the MPhil/PhD program at JNU.
Today, Ummul stands as a proud IAS officer, proving that with determination and resilience, one can overcome even the most challenging circumstances to achieve their aspirations.
