Sullia, Jan 22: An agriculturist took his own life as the leaf scar disease severely impacted the arecanut crop in his farm, leading to substantial financial losses. This marks the second case of a farmer suicide in the taluk within a month.
Narayana Nayak (55), a resident of Thota Chavadi, Markanja village in Sullia taluk, committed suicide by hanging on Sunday, January 21. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Narayana Nayak was a well-known Chende and Maddale player in Yakshagana. He is also the father of the popular Kannada teleserial actress and Yakshagana Chende percussion artiste, Divyashri Nayak Sullia.
The agriculturist faced significant losses as the arecanut crop was entirely decimated by the leaf scar disease. Additionally, the rubber yield was below expectations, causing distress in managing his life. It has been reported that he left a death note before taking his own life.
The Sullia police conducted a spot inspection at the residence.
On January 4, Jagadish (56), a resident of Aletty village, also ended his life due to financial losses resulting from the destruction of the arecanut crop caused by the leaf scar disease.
