Lucknow, Sep 17: Facing CBI inquiry, the vice-chancellor (V-C) of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Prof PK Abdul Azis blamed faculty members for conspiring against him on Saturday. Presently, a team of CBI officials is camping in the AMU campus and Prof Azis has been quizzed twice.

Prof Azis claimed that his detractors were using the platform of AMU Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) for unleashing malicious campaign that ultimately denigrates both the venerable office of the vice-chancellor and the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Prof Azis is facing CBI inquiry for financial embezzlement and misusing his office for appointment. His tenure will be over on January 17, 2012 and thus the President of India who is also the Visitor of the AMU has issued directions that Prof Azis is not
entitled to take any decision which will have long term financial and administrative consequences.

Commenting on the curbs imposed on him, the vice-chancellor said that the restriction is totally illegal. "AMUTA leaders are apparently behaving like puppets of certain politicians and the MHRD. The stand taken by them is violation of the AMU Act", he added.

Prof Azis stated that in the guise of appraisal to the Visitor, blatant lies were constantly fed by the AMUTA Executive without the required mandate of the AMU larger teaching community. "Its hidden agenda will cause irreparable damage to the university and its effective functioning," he said.

On the other hand, Secretary, AMUTA, Prof S Mustafa Zaidi stated that V-C is facing a CBI enquiry. "There is nothing new in the President's order. It is applicable to all central universities on any V-C whose tenure is nearing completion," he said.

The diatribe began when V-C Prof Azis slated the  Executive Council (EC) meeting on Saturday. The EC meeting was to be held in New Delhi and the agenda being to select the panel for appointment of new V-C.

However, the 27 member EC has 12 posts vacant including four members from teaching fraternity. Further two more member shot of letter to President citing their inability to attend the meeting. Prof Azis was forced to call of the meeting due to lack of quorum. "We cannot allow any such EC meeting which is headed by a tainted V-C. We approached the EC members and they withdrew," said Prof Zaidi.

"AMUTA representatives and their collaborators could feel happy that they could sabotage the democratic functioning of the Executive Council however they are collaborating with the anti-education, anti-Muslim and anti-AMU forces working in the government and outside", said V-C Prof  Azis.

An arbitrary decision and blatant violations in theselection procedure by the VC and the Registrar of AMU.

It is known to all the chaotic condition and the mass corruption in the Aligarh Muslim University vis-à-vis the various enquiries by the retired judges of the High Court and CBI. Inspite of these enquiries and categorical findings the corruption, nepotism, favouritism has not stopped in the University. The university administration in the bid to save guard themselves has further resorted to corrupt practices which is not only going to spoil the academic atmosphere but would jeopardize the standard of University itself.

It is pertinent to mention that the University administration knowing fully well that they are under investigation yet went ahead with corrupt practices to call for ion Committee for General/Career Advancement Scheme(CAS) to oblige either person with high connection or for some illegal wrongful gains. In the process the person who was not eligible and qualified were only called for Interview and those who objected were issued Interview Letter on the same date giving hardly two to three hours time to appear in the Interview. It was merely eyewash and subsequently the promotions were given only to the person for whom the entire process was initiated.

With reference to the ion Committee held on 15-07-2011 in Sociology (Department of Sociology & Social Work, A.M.U., Aligarh) under Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) the following facts are brought to your kind notice for further enquiry and necessary action.

Only one candidate was communicated about the said ion Committee whereas other eligible candidates were made to run from pillar to posts for the sake of Interview Letter. It was only at 4.45 P.M. on 15.07.2011 that the Interview Letter was issued to the other candidates, after harassing and causing mental torture to them since the last several days. They somehow managed to appear before the ion Committee within the short span of two and a half hour. But unfortunately the candidate for whose promotion the ion Committee was planned and arranged was promoted whereas the other candidate who was eligible for promotion from Sr. Lecturer to reader since 2006 was denied promotion. This decision of the ion Committee projected blatant discrimination, favouritism, prejudice, biasness, and disrespect for merit/academic achievements of sincere and hard-working teachers. Further, it reveals to have a soft corner for those who are well connected.

Such an arbitrary decision only reflects a callous attitude towards the hard and sincere service rendered by the teacher in an institution having the status of central university. If this remains unchallenged and not probed the trend will create an environment of autocracy rather than democracy. If the whole matter is investigated the truth will get exposed. The records of all the candidates and the ion of the worst candidate could easily be made out from the

Prof Azis should realize that AMU is run by taxpayer's money and that he is simply an employee of the central govt! He should not harbour any illusions that he can incite passions by indulging in time wasting rhetoric centering on autonomy. We all are for autonomy but not the kind of autonomy Prof Azis desires viz. autonomy in brazenly flouting AMU Act, Statutes, Ordinances, mismanagement /misappropriation of public funds and kowtowing to politicians of his choice. If he is clean why does he fear the CBI? Let the CBI do its job and law take its own course.
