Bantwal: Christine, Gilbert Carlo couple burnt alive while extinguishing fire on hill

Daijiworld Media Network – Bantwal (MS)

Bantwal, Jan 28: In a tragic incident that has been reported from Tundu Padavu near Loretto in the taluk, an elderly couple, who went atop a hill in vicinity to extinguish the fire that had engulfed a stretch of dry grass, were charred to death on Sunday, January 28, in the afternoon.

Christine Carlo (70) and her husband Gilbert Carlo (79), are the unfortunate victims of this tragedy.

This incident occured between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm on Sunday.

The elderly couple had noticed flames on the hill near their house and rushed there to check on it. They volunteered to extinguish it fearing that it might spread to the neighbourhood.  However, it is said that the fire must have engulfed the couple in the process. By the time the neighbours noticed the incident, the elderly couple had been already charred to death.

Bantwal police station personnel visited the spot.

Probably this is not the first time they've done or seen the fire in that place , as wild fires are common in such places during hot summer, however they forgot their age Even though you're mentally motivated, body gives up fighting against heat and bad gases Better call fure service and do not risk yourselves Unfortunate for the noble couple, may their souls rest in peace

RIP, very unfortunate accident. An elderly couple sacrificed their lives for a noble cause, they could have easily stayed away from these like others did. But they thought of others safety. we as humans have much to learn from these good souls, moreover such people r on the verge of extinction.

Fire in an open place!! Anyone can escape easily. I wonder why they didn't run? When fire surrounds them? Something has gone wrong somewhere

Joshua...you seem to be great fan of ACP Pradhyuman. Why did not they run? What stupid question is this? First of all see their age and some times we won't know how the fire will spread due to strong winds. I am sure they would have stuck in between due to heavy wind.

There's definitely something wrong - 1. I have never heard of such fire incidents. 2. Why would they go to extinguish and with what, given their age. 3. Who made an assumption of voluntary extinguishing of fire. 4. At what stage neighbour's or anyone come to know. 5. Why no investigation?

RIP. It's an ancient practice born of necessity but these days due to unpredictable wind direction its become dangerous.

Probably it was breezy (windy) on the hill top, that could've changed direction which must've trapped them. Maybe the locals could throw more light into this incident. Very sad incident.

Very sad incident...Rest in peace...It looks like both of them lighted up fire in opposite side and in multiple areas too, so they did not find escape route while fire rapidly covered entire circle....I do not see any other reason for not finding escape route....

Amit Shetty, You have highlighted one valid point. When the fire spread in their hilltop dry bush, to extinguish it, they did not find escape route while fire rapidly covered entire circle. If they had asked help from the neighbors, their life would have saved.
