Udupi, Feb 1: Ashok Raj, the iconic artist known for his entertaining performances in tiger costumes in Kadabettu, Udupi, breathed his last in a private hospital in Udupi on Thursday evening.
Popularly known as the "Tiger King," he led a team of entertainers who performed in tiger costumes at Kadabettu. He fell ill while participating in an entertainment program during the first week of October 2023 and was initially admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru. Subsequently, his medical treatment continued in Udupi and Manipal.
For the past 36 years, he delighted audiences by entertaining them in tiger costumes, particularly during Astami and other festive occasions.
Over the last 28 years, Ashok Raj built and led his team, earning awards for their performances in the twin districts. He played a crucial role in training numerous individuals, earning respect as a mentor.
His group gained international recognition when it was selected for shooting tiger dance scenes in Udupi by Professor S A Krishnaiah for the BBC team.
Sushma Raj, Ashok Raj's daughter, shared the news of his demise on social media.
