New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS): Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Wednesday expressed anguish at the loss of lives in Sunday's Sikkim earthquake.

Meira Kumar, who is in Jaipur to inaugurate the 76th Conference of Presiding Officers of Legislative Bodies in India, wrote a letter to Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, in which she also expressed pain at the devastation caused by the temblor.

"I am pained to learn about the devastation caused by the earthquake. My heart goes out to the affected families particularly those who have lost their near and dear ones. I convey my condolences to them," she said in her letter.

"I am confident that under your able leadership, the rescue and relief work is being done speedily. We are with you in this difficult time," she added.

The 6.8-magnitude quake Sunday rattled large parts of eastern and northern India, Nepal, Tibet and Bangladesh, killing more than 60 people in Sikkim alone.
