Palestinians Deserve State of Their Own : Obama

United Nations, Sep 22 (IANS): Acknowledging that the Palestinians have their vision of statehood delayed for too long, US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he still believes the Palestinian people deserve "a state of their own".

"One year ago, I stood at this podium and called for an independent Palestine," the US president told the UN General Assembly, adding: "I believed then -- and I believe now -- that the Palestinian people deserve a state of their own," Xinhua reported.

The Palestinians are now seeking their statehood through the UN Security Council, a move vehemently opposed by the US and Israel.

"Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the UN," Obama said. "If it were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now."

He, however, reiterated the US' "unshakable" commitment to Israel's security.
