Bengaluru, Feb 13: The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government has tabled a bill making it mandatory for all business establishments in the State to display their name-boards with 60% in Kannada language and in the upper half of the name-boards.

The State Government had sent a proposal to the Governor Thawaar chand Gehlot to bring an ordinance on the issue following demands from Kannada organisations. The Governor had returned the bill without giving his assent.

Now, the government has formally tabled the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, February 13.

The Bill made a provision that the name boards of commercial, industrial and business undertakings, trusts, counselling centres, hospitals, laboratories, amusement centres, hotels etc., should display 60% in Kannada language and Kannada should be displayed in the upper half of the name board.

The aims and objects in the Bill said, “It is necessary to amend Kannada Basha Samagra Abhivruddhi Adhiniyama, 2022 to appoint the director, directorate of Kannada and Culture as the member and the secretary, Kannada Development Authority to be the convener of the State level committee” and to make a provision that name boards should display 60% in Kannada.

Now, authorities will use square footage to determine 60% Kannada or not. All that was required was to have name in both Kannada and other languages optionally. But no, Kannada has to be slightly bigger. I guess, size does matter.

Alright 60% name in Kannada agreed but will you agree to bare 60% cost to setup a new board Mr, Siddu??? Some businesses are already suffering and this will add up to more number of suicides. The best solution is to make it mandatory for new business establishments.
