New Delhi, Sep 22: Former Indian skipper, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (70) passed away after a brief illness at Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi on Thursday September 22 evening.

Mansoor, who was also known as Tiger Pataudi hailed from the Nawab family of Pataudi in Madhya Pradesh. He is survived by son Saif Ali Khan, and daughters Soha Ali Khan and Saba, besides wife Sharmila Tagore. Saif and Soha are accomplished actors in the Hindi film industry, and Sharmila Tagore too is a cine star of yesteryears.

All of them, including Saif's partner actress Kareena Kapoor, were by his side when he breathed his last at 5.55 pm.

Hospital sources stated that Pataudi was suffering from lung infection and was admitted to the hospital in August. He remained critically ill and was admitted in the ICU. He was on very high level of oxygen support requiring intermittent Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP). Pataudi was suffering from interstitial lung disease, a condition in which the passage of oxygen to the two lungs is reduced. The disease does not have permanent cure but a person can survive with support on BIPAP machine.

Earlier on Thursday, he was put on ventilator after his condition worsened.

Pataudi was born on January 5, 1941. A car accident permanently damaged vision in his right eye when he was only 20. This, however, did not affect his widely acclaimed playing skills.

He was the ninth and last Nawab of Pataudi, now in Haryana.

For the records, Pataudi played 46 Tests for the country, scoring 2,793 runs for an average of 34.91 with an unbeaten 203 being his highest score. He scored six centuries and 16 fifties in his career. He was the youngest cricketer to captain India, at the age of 21.

Very talented cricketer and agile fielder. The spin attack of Prasanna, Bedi, Chandrashekar and Venkatraghavan was a deadly attack on the opponents, ably groomed by this great person. That was the golden era of spin attack. Though he was from the royal family, he was at ease with his team mates. He was one of his kind. ferns, Dubai, he lost his eye in a car accident in England.

I was deeply saddened when I learned about 'Tiger' Pataudi's passing. What can I say about this great person. He was my childhood hero. Charismatic and dashing cricketer both as a batsman, fielder and captain. His effortless 4s and 6s were a delight to watch. His cuts and drives were artistic and unforgettable. He was a player of my times. I saw him scoring 100 against England in Bangalore in 1972. How he made use of Chandrashekar and won the match Calcutta in 1974 against West Indies speaks volumes about his cricket knowledge and courage. He has no peers in cricket. No doubt a great personality within and without cricket. Heartfelt condolences. May his soul rest in peace.

It was very shocking news. He was the player of our time and a thorough gentleman cricketer. He had great respect among the cricket players and he was a very charming person with strong voice and royal British accent. We will miss Tiger Pataudi. I extend my deepest condolence to Sharmilaji, Saif including Kareena, Zoha and Saba.
May his soul rest in peace!

Pat as he was affectionately called was a great teamman and without doubt one of the best Captains cricket has known. He changed the very outlook of Indian cricket and the spin quartet of Chandreshekar, Prassana, Bedi & Venkat were indeed groomed by him. It is all his basic hard work which reaped dividents for another great Indian Captain Ajit Wadekar. Most unfortunately post retirement, cricket India has not fully utilised his vast knowledege and talent . The cricket fraternity will sorely miss him .
