Mangalore: Family Alleges Hospital of Charging High Fee, Hiding News of Death

Mangalore, Sep 24: Chaos prevailed at city's Mangala hospital here on Saturday September 24 after the family of a deceased person alleged that the hospital was charging exorbitant fee and also accused the doctors of negligence.

Aitha Gowda (59), a resident of Shibaje, near Beltangady was admitted in Mangala hospital on September 11 and was diagnosed with rat fever and jaundice. As many as 40 bottles of blood were also given as per the prescription of doctors.

He was said to be better two days ago. However, on Saturday the doctors declared him dead and told the family to pay up Rs 68,000 as bill without which they said the body would not be handed over. The patient's party had already paid Rs 35,000 as bill earlier.

When deceased person's son and others saw the body, they were shocked to learn that it was in a completely decomposed state. Annoyed and angry, they argued with the doctors that he might have died at least three days ago and that the doctors kept it a secret until Saturday to demand more money from the bereaved family.

Kadri police intervened and calmed down the situation. The hospital authorities then agreed to hand over the body without demanding the said amount from the patient’s party.

Without knowing the truth people how can you criticise someone. Will a rickshaw driver a poor passenger free or will a shopkeeper provide free provisions to any poor coming to their shops.will a hotelier giv free food to any one? Then how can people judge a professional without knowing any thing about his field of work and the consequences of a situation. Goverment facilities are available to help the people who really cant afford. You cant go to a hotel and drink tea/coffee and when you are presented a bill say its not acceptable. Wil you gather people to make noise.patients who come in a serious condition needing emergency care will be attended to by the doctors to the best of their ability regardless of the cost or outcome. They too are humans not God.about hospital bills , try buying medicines, oxygen, fluids etc on your own from pharmacies and companies! it doesnt come free. Least of all the effort that goes in to trying to save the patient. Believe me nobody feels more happy than the doctor himself when the patient recovers and goes home. The reverse is true when patient doesnt make it. Commenting this way will demoralise the doctors . For people who cant effort so much concessions are made if asked for. But creating bad publicity and creating a scene with the ever ready goons who appear from no where with media tagging along is no way out. That too without knowing the truth about the situation. We need to remember this is a noble profession and has its costs

Rat fever comes with various components.Pulmonary (Lung) , hematological( Blood). when lungs fail patient is to be put on ventilator
because he goes for what is called as ARDS because for cost purpose we cant let the patient breathe just spontaneously
Then come the Blood problem where they have coagulation problem which means blood fails to clot and patient will be continuously bleeding. Due to these problems the patients goes through Multi organ failure
So u see how much Docs have to go through just to pull the patient out from this problem.
Ards is a very difficult problem to treat but not impossible
So there are various things involved.
Mr Praveen i have been in a medical college trust me you dont want to know the state of the icu and the wards there
Before posting comments about corruption and blaming the doctors remember one thing tom you all will need them and have to trust them even before God

Trust is the fundamantal part in doctor-patient relationship. Prior proper research it is not wise to jump the barrel. Leptospirosis with established ARDS, Multi Organ Failure is a critical condition with grave prognosis. World's best hopitals sometimes write off cases with so many confounding factors. As a doctor handling such cases let me assure u that expenses do not figure even in a periphery of our thoghts. The earnest attempt is to save a life.Dear readers, kindly check the credibility of these claims of negligence before targetting honest doctors who sacrifice a lot for their patients.

This patient was brought to the hospital with leptospirosis (rat fever )and deep jaundice. He was in a serious condition and needed emergency care in ICU. His condition was explained to the patient and consent for treating got.He was put on ventillatory support and was looked after by emminent doctors . He had low platelet count and would hence bleed from even cannula site. Blood transfusions were given. Patient was also on dialysis as his urine output was less from the start. But the outcome of rat fever(leptospirosis) with multiorgan failure, bleeding disorder is poor. Yet doctors did their best inspite of the outcome hoping to, if possible save the patient. patients who have come early with this condition, have got well and have gone home too.this patient came critical and couldnt be saved inspite of sincere efforts. ICU care has expenses in a private hospital and this was explained to the patient in the beginning. Patient party had accepted and even said not to bother about cost and to try saving him.when patient expired they went for billing and then rest followed. They got Ramsene / bajrang dal people, who came along with the press. Police protection was asked for. Concessions are given on humanitarian grounds to many patients even otherwise. Patients hav even paid bills after going home on a later date.medicine is all about trust, humanity and best professional care. spreading false facts hurt the medical team

Sorry to see the families loosing a family member, and then getting police involved in the incident during the time of sorrow. I do know that health care is also a business looking toward saving money. However, first priority is saving life. There should be a regulatory board in every state and regulate the medical costs for consumers. Regulatory board must include consumers too including the daily wage consumer. There should a website available freely to consumer include what can a medical facility can charge for a procedure. I think the best way out to get this out to consumer is TV and radio announcement on consumer education and available help. I do know there are no regulatory body to watch the practice of medical personnel in India. We are far behind in providing health care to the poor and needy, but we are far ahead in technology. I hope government will work towards helping poor and the needy too with health care grants. How about people voice this and bring a change to help others. This is only a suggestion and hope this helps.

Medicine is totally business oriented profession today. Even the so called charitable institutions are out to make money. As many have pointed out, majority of doctors resort to unethical practices by recommending unnecessary tests, operations, biopsies etc. and they get cuts for every test. Drug cos. offer them big cuts by way of gifts , sponsorship for conferences (which is nothing but a paid holiday abroad), paying petrol bills and what not. A bold and outspoken Dr. B. M. Hegde has to be heard to when he speaks the maladies in the profession. At the same time, I agree with Dr. Kamath when he cites the financial equation. Imagine, today, the capitation fee for postgraduate radiology seat is 1.25cr. How can the radiologist recover this amount without resorting to unethical practices in collusion with others. So in a way the entire system itself has gotten rotted due to entry of pvt. players backed by politicians. Insurance cos. too are aware that they are getting fleeced by unscrupulous doctors and only recently they have put a ceiling on payment disbursal for individual body part operations like cataract, gallbladder, etc. etc. It is ultimately the poor who suffer because it does not make any difference to the upper middle class and rich. But I would like to point out that Mangalore is relatively cheap compared to any other big city in India!!

Asha J Shetty, Mangalore,I want to give an exmaple like this please read The Cost of Flat in Mangalore is Rs 35 Lacs and If I take Loan the EMI will be Rs 40,000 Per Month .The School Fees for 2 children will be Rs 2,000 Per Month ,Cost of Petrol for the car is Rs 15,000 per month .Electricity bill Rs 1500 per month ,Telephone Bill Rs 1000 per month .Food and other costs Rs 8,000 per month Total per Month I need Rs 67,500 to lead a decent Life

How is this possible If I dont charge even Rs 500 per visit in Inpatient hospital ??and Note there is no savings here just cost .so the solution is go for MEDICLAIM INSURANCE rather than blaming Doctors .

Indian Medical costs are the Least in the world .You have to Just pay Rs 1000 per year for Rs 1,00,000 Medical Insurance Cover .Had this patient gone for insurance the whole Money would havebeen paid by Insurance company .Now days it is Total Cashless .The Company directly pays the hospital .That is how system works in Mumbai

In modern India the hospitals, the schools, the colleges etc run by the business entrepreneurs are all a big blood suckers. They misuse their authority and exploit the innocent needy victims. There is no control over their functioning and there are no surprise inspections to check whether such enterprises are well equipped with need facilities, they should come under RTI act etc.

The inspecting team on these enterprises should get the feedback from the patience/ students and all the negative remarks should be placed in record and remedial actions should be initiated.

There should be an independent commission to check such enterprises and the Govt should pass a bill so that such enterprises should be made to reserve 30% of their facilities to the Poor BPLs with 10% preference to the needy people around the region of the establishments.

Extracting money from the family/patient this way doesn't taste good. No great difference between a robber who threatens life of a weak individual to extract wealth. This hospital should be scanned regularly by the concerned,if this news is true.

All over India private hospitals doing a business rather then service. If any patient visit hospital the doctors unnessaraly do a major test like blood test Kidney test, angiography etc, etc, that test this test and looting poor patients buy saying u have this sikness that sickness and admit in the hospital and demand for the security deposit of huge money.

This kind of business going on but public will obey the doctors and do all. Finally if patient dies they will not inform theire family members. They will force the patient party to pay the advace bill amount. After paying they will tell the patient party that is patient is very serious and for the further invistigation u need to pay the operation cost or else u can take the patient to the big hospital all this is the drama from the doctors of the some private hospitals.

So Public should lock out all this business in the name of hospital. Wake up people and fight for the illigal hospitals thoes who do the business. Anna Hazare fighting againt corruption same way genral public we will fight against these kind of private hopitals.

Wake up people we all know specially in Mangalore and Udupi there are many hospital came up in the name of good servise. But this is not the servise this is the doctors business. High imcome generating business. Govt should invistegate all the hopitals and doctors and stop this business.

These sort of cases we have been hearing from many many hospitals in and around Mangalore and Udupi districts for the past recent years. People and the relatives of deceased thereafter grumble, curse the hospitals/doctors and ultimately keep quiet, saying the person they have lost cannot come back.

Therefore, these hospitals take advantage and continue doing the samething with others as well, since they know that nothing is going to happen. Moreover during this stage (after a patient has breathed his last) no relatives are allowed to go into the IC ward to see the patient, until they his death.

I hope at least now, many who have undergone such cases, will share their experience.
