Mangalore, Sep 25: "Konkani playwrights and actors do not get enough encouragement and support these days. We see very few organisations producing Konkani plays, and of late, native speakers of Konkani seem to be getting entertainment more from Tulu dramas rather than Konkani plays," said Melwyn D'Cunha, president, MCC Bank.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the 68th annual day celebrations of Konkani Natak Sabha at its own Don Bosco Hall in the heart of the city on Sunday, September 25.

"If there is any hope left for Konkani dramas, it is due to the efforts of a few organisations, and one among them is definitely Konkani Natak Sabha," he said.

Rohan Monteiro, managing director, Property Infratech India Pvt Ltd, was the guest of honour. "Plays were the main source of entertainment for the older generation. But today, despite the multiplex cinema culture, if Konkani dramas have survived, we must give its credit to organisations like Konkani Natak Sabha," he said.

Fr Prakash Lobo, editor, Sevak Konkani monthly magazine presided over the function in the absence of the president of Konkani Natak Sabha, Fr Cyprian Peter D'Souza.  He welcomed the guests and the audience.

Mary Lobo and Lucy Mascarenhas, were felicitated by the chief guest and guest of honour on the occasion, in recognition of their service to Konkani stage as prompters. They were draped with shawls and presented with citations and mementos.

Sunil Menezes, secretary, read the annual report and Jerald Concesso, assistant secretary proposed the vote of thanks. Dolphy Saldanha, treasurer and Gretta Rebello, vice-president were present on the dais.

On the occasion, a socially-relevant hilarious Konkani play 'Sangon Mugdana' by Pradeep Barboza, Paladka and directed by Dolla Nandigudda was enacted by some of the finest actors of Mangalore. The playwright's father, Edward Barboza was present and received memento on behalf of his son from the organisers.

The casting included Dolphy Saldanha, Melwyn Almeida, Richard Sequeira, Robin Sequeira, Meera Pinto, Simon Pinto, Arun Noronha, Jerlad Towers, Melissa D'Souza, Alwyn Veigas, Ronald Pereira, Judy Pinto, Jerome Veigas, Sunil Crasta, Sanjith Rodrigues, Melwyn D'Souza, Munita Veigas, Vivek Madoor, Nellu Permannur and Charlie Sequeira.  Claud D'Souza was the assistant director of the drama.

Like every year, this year too, Konkani Natak Sabha organised various competitions to mark its annual day and the prize distribution ceremony was held on Saturday, September 24 at Don Bosco Hall. Dr Edward Nazareth, vice-president, MCC Bank presided over the function and distributed the prizes.

Another reason for the decline is that I have observed Konkani plays always depict a particular community with performers of the same community. So the Konkani speaking people of other communities and even regions do not show interest in watching the plays. Therefore, in order to improve the situation there should be a joint venture in the field, talented artistes and technicians, should include members of all communities and regions speaking the same language.
