Mangalore: Heights of Polygamy - Police Arrest Husband of 30 Women

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 26: The policemen, who have dug deep into the past of Ramakrishna alias Dubai Ramakrishna alias Ramesh Babu (46), a native of T Narasipur taluk in Mysore district, whom they had arrested recently based on a complaint, were surprised to find that in fact, he had married about 30 women so far. His story reminds one of Mohan Kumar from the district, who married about 20 girls and murdered them. A la Mohan Kumar, Ramakrishna too succeeded in making innocent women believe what he said, but unlike Mohan, he did not kill his wives.

Ramakrishna, it is found, hails from Doddamoolagodu village in Mysore district. He attended three years of the five-year LLB degree course. He did part time work at a few places thereafter, before thinking of the following modus operandi. He has two children.

Ramakrishna was arrested on September 12 by a police team headed by Bunder police inspector, Vinay Gaonkar, based on a complaint filed by a woman, who said that he had swindled gold ornaments worth Rs 1.71 lac last year, by promising to marry her. The police team has since found that 11 cases of frauds relating to promises of marriage have been filed against the accused in various police stations in the state. In many cases, the aggrieved have not filed complaints, fearing that their image would be tarnished. Ramakrishna, who has been in this profession since the last six years, was jailed a few times, but refused to give up.

The accused used to release an advertisement seeking proposals of alliance from widowed or divorced women. A woman from here was also duped by him in this fashion. Reportedly, on August 10 last year, he met the woman who had contacted him on the basis of one such advertisement in a hotel, and then made good his escape after getting gold ornaments pledged by her in Gurpur Service Cooperative Bank released the next day, by paying pending loan amount.

Ramakrishna made women to believe that his wife had died, and that he has a son from the previous marriage. He claimed he drew very good salary. After marrying the women, he spent some time with them, before disappearing with their cash and valuables. He then threw the SIM card of the mobile phone away so that he could not be contacted. The policemen have found that wherever he was in judicial custody, he neither tried to obtain bail, nor appointed lawyers. He depended on the lawyers provided by the government. It is learnt that he has defrauded widows living in the city and Beltangady, apart from some more from Bangalore, Hubli, Mandya, etc. Women should exercise caution about such people, advised Vinay Gaonkar.

Vinay Gaonkar’s success in arresting the culprit came in for lavish praise at the meeting of grievances of scheduled castes and tribes, held on Sunday at the office of the police commissioner here. The police commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, requested the concerned not to subject policemen to never-ending series of criticisms, but to identify and recognize them whenever they do appreciable work.
