240 Injured in Shanghai Subway Trains' Accident


Shanghai, Sep 27 (IANS): Over 240 passengers were injured Tuesday when a subway train rear-ended another train here, authorities said.

Most of the injures were light, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co. said in a statement.

The accident occurred around 2.50 p.m. following a signal system failure at one station.

About 500 passengers had been evacuated from the trains, reported Xinhua.

Photos posted on weibo.com, China's popular Twitter-like microblogging site, showed many passengers bleeding, with firefighters entering the train to rescue the injured.

Subway services at nine stations on the line had been halted.
