Tractor loan issue: Three of family die by suicide in Gadag

Gadag, Mar 4 (IANS): Three members of a family, including two women, died by suicide after a dispute over loan on a tractor in a village in Karnataka's Gadag district.

The incident took place in Gonal village in Lakshmeshwar taluk of the district.

The deceased have been identified as 49-year-old Renuka Teli, her son 22-year-old Manjunath Teli and maternal aunt 47-year-old Savakka Teli.

According to police, there was a dispute between mother Renuka and son Manjunath over the repayment of the tractor loan. The family had purchased a tractor after getting a Rs 4 lakh loan from a bank.

After the quarrel, Renuka Teli left the house and committed suicide by jumping before a train. Her son Manjunath, who followed her, also came under train while trying to stop her, the preliminary reports suggested.

After coming to know of the deaths, Manjunath’s maternal aunt Sakavva Teli hanged herself at the residence. The police have taken up the case for investigation and were recording the statements of eyewitnesses.

Excepting for the cutthroat interest rates and deadly harrasment of loan sharks which operate in abundance, banks too are not less aggressive when it comes to recovery of defaulted loans; they hire private goons to get behind the defaulters to get back their money; there is no scope for the defaulters and the collaterals to escape their wrath even if the reasons are very genuine!!

Unfortunately no media is highlighting these issues. The ruling party is busy promoting an industrialist's family wedding. The media is busy creating hatred towards minorities. Someone who raises these issues is made fun off and their character is being assassinated. The ruling party is hiding the poverty issues in order to claim that India has now become a super power. They are only projecting massive projects which only benefit the rich industrialists. Unemployment and the cost of living is rising. Salaries are not increasing except for the government employees. Middle class are getting poorer and the poor are left with no option other than to commit suicides. Hope people vote wisely in the coming elections.

@Vinod; very true, there is tremendous amount of poverty and hunger stricken populace below the froth being displayed by paid mainstream media; almost every second day one or the other farmer commits suicide only in this particular State mostly due to farm debt related issues!

Very tragic and sad incident; one must remember that almost entire of Uttara Kannada is reeling under severe drought conditions; oxen and cattle (prime possession of farmers) are being sold off at dirt cheap rates due to lack of fodder and drinking water, most farmers who had taken loans to grow various crops, fruits etc are in dire straits! The conditions in many talukas are so bad that, forget farming, there is already acute scarcity of drinking water! IMO, this suicide case seems to because of fammily problems in loan repayment!!
