Kundapura, Mar 10: “I would like to identify myself as a commoner rather than a minister. All fishermen are my relatives. It is because of them today that I have become the fisheries minister,” said Mankala S Vaidya, minister for fisheries, ports and inland water transport.
Mankala spoke after disbursing compensation and various facilities to the kin of the victim fishermen. He further said, “A sum of Rs 1 lac to 10 lac will be given as compensation within 24 hours of any boat accident. If a fisherman dies during fishing, a sum of Rs 8 lac will be paid as compensation. In the coming days those who do not have agricultural land will be given government facilities.”
Compensation was disbursed to the families of the victims of the boat fire mishap that occurred on November 13, 2018.
Life jacket and lifebuoy were given to eligible fishermen. Compensation kits were distributed to fishermen belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes.
Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna urged the minister and the government of Karnataka to prepare a master plan for the development of Gangolli port.
MLA Kiran Kumar Kodgi, additional DC Mamata Devi, Madan Kumar Uppunda, Vivek R, Anjanadevi T, Sanjeeva Arakere and Kumari Sumalata were present.
Additional director of fishing ports Malpe Harish Kumar welcomed.
