Udupi: Suicide of Emerging National Athlete - Youth Arrested

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Sep 29: Police on Wednesday September 28 arrested a youth in connection to the suicide case of emerging national-level athlete, Prathvi Ampar, at Brahmavar on Tuesday September 27. He is expected to be produced in court on Thursday.

The man had been taken into custody by police for questioning on Tuesday itself, based on a complaint made by Shankar Poojary, uncle of Prathvi. The police said that the youth confessed sending messages to Prathvi and called her over the mobile several times, and that he had been pestering her since some time, as he felt that she had not been in love with him of late, and ignoring him.

The youth, identified as Misbal, reportedly had failed in the degree examination and used to work as broker for cars and motor bikes. Prathvi got to know him as he used to visit the ground to play cricket when she practised there. While she ruled out any relationship other than friendship, and kept a distance from him since some time, he continued efforts to contact her, it is gathered.

In this connection, the police are likely to interrogate several students, warden of the hostel, trainers of Prathvi, and principal of the college. The post mortem report has confirmed that Prathvi died because of hanging, and that there were no evidences of any physical exploitation.

A delegation of students who met the police circle inspector, Krishnamurthy, on Wednesday, were promised that the culprits would be brought to book within a week. The delegation comprised representatives of Brahmavar SMS PU College Students Association, SMS College Students Association, and All College Students Association.

In a press conference organized at Kundapur, Billava Samaja Seva Sangh vice-president, Mani Gopal, urged the police to bring to the fore the culprits behind the suicide of Prathvi. He said there have been suspicions about the roles played by certain individuals in Prathvi’s life, leading to her decision to end life. He warned that activists will take to street all over the twin-districts if justice is not done in the case.

The cremation of the ill-fated athlete was conducted near her native place, Ampar, in Kundapur taluk, on Wednesday afternoon. Shops and other establishments in the village had downed their shutters as a mark of respect for Prathvi. A protest meeting is being organized at 4 pm on Thursday September 29 near Brahmavar bus stand under the aegis of BJP and Hindu organizations.

Nothing is proven in this extremely tragic case, while a Muslim unemployed Romeo has already been arrested, it is perhaps time to remember the shocking rape and murder of an innocent, very young, academically brilliant and beautiful girl called Soumya Bhat. It was an extremely tearful tragedy that rocked the whole Puttur town (all the public literally wept during the funeral) and South Kanara district many years ago.

Sadly, the accused, a local rowdy and sex maniac (who finally accepted guilt but was conveniently ‘allowed’ to escape while on way to trial court) was openly supported by a ‘noted MLA’ just because the confirmed murderer hailed from that community!

The public was so angry that the entire city witnessed communal clashes, an extraordinary chapter in south kanara history, something that no one will ever miss while passing through the nodal ‘Soumya Bhat Bus Stand’ strategically located in Kabaka on way to Mangalore or Kasaragod.

Sadly, events seem to happen again and again!

It is already known to every one in town that Sattar was singularly responsible for Akshata's murder! The police have already arrested 3 persons who have revealed and confirmed the same: Sattar's father Abbas, his friends Ashraf, an autorickshaw driver called Jaggu. Sadly, we will have no justice because he is from the ‘minority’ community! And of course this is India not Pakistan or the middle east.

South Canara district has transcended as a heavy-fuel obscurantist society, with extreme religious fundamentalism. Which in many instances, disturbingly involves threatening girls on their personal life, on their dress codes, relationships and systematically targeting opposite communities. It is broadly evident, that there are few mysterious cases of 'Love Jihad' in outskirts of kerala. But the fact is, those acts are unlikely to occur in the high-sensitive regions of mangalore!

The emerging Sportswoman, has lost her promising career and precious life due to the coercion/threats from 'evil' goons of the Saffron gangs, who loiter around in the midnight to trap cow-slaughters and later in the day,'torment' young girls by deliberately intervening in their personal lives.

On several occasion in the past, they have drawn themselves into these issues, not with the requisite of justice, but with an wicked mindset of 'communal'profiling. Considering, Misbal as a suspect/ conspirator, what if his name was 'Sachin Shetty'? Would this 'Goons' stepped out for Demonstration? Educated Mangaloreans need to Think Logically.

It s not a matter of violating communal harmony here the demand is culprit should be punished.. Last day it was from BJP remember today it was from billava association irrespective of party people gathered.. Where is women commission where did human rights commission go,...?

Its very sad news about this poor girl who has commited suicide. And this is not right to say that boy should be punished without and proper evidence. Firstly police should ivistegate the matter, what is the real reason for the suicide means who all invold in the harresing this girl, like colleage & Hostel authority,Coach,Co-students,family members & this boy Misbal.

Police should enquire and invistigate the matter first. And culprit should be given regirous punishment without any bail. And Girl had made a mistake commiting suicide its also crime. Suicide is not end of problem or solution.

In this mordern society people have more information about everthing every matters. Before taking this drastic step Girl should be talk the matter with her parents/college authority or else she should be complient the matter to the police. Any case anybody I will say suicide is not the solution or it will not end the problem.

I call upon all the girls/boys or anyone for that matter, who is undergoing stress and trauma due to any kind of harassment not to suffer in silence and try taking extreme steps like suicide but to inform the authorities like parent/guardian, teacher, principal, police or any responsible person so that corrective action can be taken on the concerned before it is too late.

Taking one's own life and leaving a suicide note is of no use to anyone as its only a part of post mortem. Even a very simple anonymous complaint would do the trick and bring the culprit to book. Let us be pro active and try our best to stop these tragic and avoidable incidents from happening.

I share some of the views of Jossey Saldanha, Mapusa / Mumbai. Many times for the rising female stars including athletic, there is a exploitation in all level. Unless the girl is strong and knows how to handle, it is very difficult and the support of the parents are equally important. Most of the times, the trustworthy people turns to be wolf.

One international sports woman complained to me along with her own father, few months back. the undue torture by the coach and seniors.

It is difficult to say in which angle the investigation going to take place. The girl should have mentioned the name of the person(s) who is harassing ,in her suicidal note . Now confusion and problem to others. Who thinks to commit suicide talk to someone about your feelings. It is important to remember that there are people who are willing and able to talk with you about your suicidal thoughts. With proper treatment, most suicidal people can be helped to feel better about life.

People for you to consider talking with include, A family member, a close friend, spiritual adviser, your health professional (doctor). There are some school ,college, teachers and lecturers who are good in councelling. One who gets the suicidal thought should openly tell their problem they may get relief or solution. Good teachers or lecturers may be able to help someone who is considering suicide.

I don’t think Misbal (the arrested youth) is the culprit. He is case of pure infatuation because her autopsy results confirm she was never physically exploited. Police have to explore other angles like was she under pressure from parents to marry a boy of their choice or was her coach / principal / teacher wanting some weird favors. There is also a possibility of some guy filming her secretly and blackmailing her. Her email and phone conversations need to be looked into.
