Mangaluru, Mar 12: Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur announced on March 12 that the road stretch from Circuit House to Bejai Circle will be renamed after the late Padma Bhushan recipient, George Fernandes.
Addressing the media, he stated, "The grand inauguration will take place after the elections. I initially proposed this during Jayanand Anchan's tenure as mayor, and it was subsequently discussed in the council meeting. Following that, the proposal was forwarded to the standing committee, where no objections were raised after its publication. Now, the government has sanctioned the proposal, and the renaming of the road to honour late George Fernandes will soon become a reality.
"There has been a consistent demand from the public to rename the road, supported by Richard Moras from Konkani Lekak Sangh," he added.
"I also want to extend my gratitude to chief minister Siddaramaiah and urban development minister Byrathi Suresh for promptly addressing the request to rename the Late George Fernandes road," he said.
Regarding the water scarcity within the corporation limits, he mentioned, "There is indeed a water scarcity in a few wards. Currently, we have a water level of 6 meters in the dam. I urge people to conserve water, particularly by minimizing vehicle washing. Additionally, we will take legal action, including filing FIRs, against those with unauthorized water connections. If the water level drops at Thumbay, we will request the deputy commissioner to release water from the AMR dam. Presently, we have 6 water tanks supplying water."
