Mangaluru, Mar 13: Father Muller Rotary Skin Bank will be inaugurated on March 15 at Father Muller Hospital, informed medical superintendent Dr Uday Kumar.
Addressing media on Wednesday March 13, he said, “Rotary club of Mangaluru saw an opportunity to reach out to the community on the issues of health at Father Muller Medical College Hospital to set up a human skin bank attached to the burns unit of the hospital to bring quicker healing and save lives of the patients with severe burn injuries.
“The project which was conceived in the Rotary year 2022-23 when Rotarian R K Bhat was the president, will be now inaugurated under current president Kishan Kumar and rotary district governor Rotarian H R Keshav on March 15. The premises will be blessed by Dr Richard Aloysius Coelho, director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions.
“We have a state-of the-art facility where skin will be collected, processed and preserved. Similar to the donation of organs, those who are willing to donate, they can donate skin as well. The advantage of skin bank is for those who have burn injuries, donated skin can be used to avoid any kind of infections. A skin can be preserved up to 5-6 months if processed in a right way. This is completely a service oriented initiative and not income generating exercise. As similar to eyes, even skin can be donated after the death of a patient, that too within up to 6 hours,” said Dr Uday Kumar.
Director FMCI Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, project manager Archibald Menezes, president Rotary Club of Mangalore Kishan Kumar, immediate past president R K Bhat, administrator Fr Ajith B Menezes, and assistant administrator Fr Nelson Dheeraj Pais were present.
