Mangalore: Chaos at Hospital - Management Blames Sri Rama Sene

Mangalore: Chaos at Hospital - Management Blames Sri Rama Sene

Daijiworld Media Nework - Mangalore

Mangalore, Sep 30: On Saturday September 24 city's Mangala Hospital was in the news for allegedly charging exorbitant fee from a deceased patient's party and refusing to hand over the body till the payment was made. It was also alleged that the doctors had deliberately hid the news of the patient's death from the family.

Aitha Gowda (59) was admitted to the hospital on September 11 and diagnosed with rat fever and jaundice. After his family came to know of his death and the consequent chaos that followed, a group of people protested and Kadri police had to intervene to reach a compromise on the issue of payment.

File Photo

The media reported extensively on the incident, and as a result the hospital management has come out with a clarification stating, "The people who came to argue and abuse us after the patient expired were from Sri Rama Sena, as they claimed."

In a written statement to Daijiworld, the hospital management questions, "How was it that a few media people came to know about this activity of Sri Rama Sene and were seen in the hospital premises even before their activists reached the hospital? Is it that hospitals have now become equal to pubs for them to come and abuse us?"

The management also questions, "What qualifications have they (Sri Rama Sene) to decide on the negligence of doctors in treating a critically ill patient who we were trying to bring back from death?"

Criticising the media, the management said, "Before publishing those reports media should at least have the courtesy to speak to the doctors, go through records and give an actual and factual picture."

Achutha (Aitha) Gowda, a resident of Beltangady was admitted to the hospital at 6.45 pm on September 11, with a history of fever with chills and rigors three days back. He later developed vomiting associated with abdomen distention and decreased urine output, and generalised debility. The patient was admitted and investigated at Puttur local hospital and shifted to Mangala for further treatment.

According to Dr Ganapathy, who was supervising the patient, the chances of death in established case of Leptospirosis with multi-organ failure are to the extent of 60-70%, which was explained to the patent's family members, who were given the option of treating him in any other hospital or taking him to a government hospital in case of shortage of funds.

At least seven doctors attended the patient during the treatment period. As many as 43 bottles of blood were transfused, together with seven haemodialyses.

According to the management, the patient was in critical care for 10 days and in intensive care unit for two days.

The management has rubbished the allegations of charging exorbitantly or deliberately keeping the patient in the hospital for monitory benefits.

Complete medical report of the patient and clarifications from the management are in possession of Daijiworld.

Sudarshan Shetre... it is not the matter of any comments satisfying anyone's view. If any person is against to corruption, he should comment impartially on it. Here Mr. Nagesh nayak points his finger to the corruption of UPA govt and keeps mum to the corruption of BJP. Why this double standard?? now tell me who need treatment we or you and Nagesh Party..?

I could sum up the whole problem with just one word 'REGULATION'. Good and bad apples exist everywhere around the globe and more so when the system is not well regulated. I know of lots of my friends who are doctors who are pretty honest and work in big hospitals but are forced to do things which they do not like by powerful owners of hospitals who are non doctors in many cases.

India has a huge private health sector but only a small percentage can afford private health care although that numbers can be huge. Private insurance will not sort the problem and it will only increase the malpractices. The number of people having private health insurance in India is negligible.

These sorts of thing is less likely to happen in the UK and Canada where health is free for everyone irrespective of wealth or status in society. In these two countries the regulations are very strict and doctors are monitored at every step including things they prescribe especially antibiotics. In Europe people pay a health premium and again the system is highly regulated. In the US the system is not ideal. Private insurance firms rip off patients and make money. The recession there might have tamed them a bit.25% of population in the US do not have access toprivate health care and are just left in the lurch.

What India needs at the moment is tighter controls so that no one abuses the system and that is the only answer to the current problem facing health sector.

Ashiwin, really sorry to hear about you sister. now I am elling you a new story which is going on in a famous corporate hospital in Chennai. The Victims son is a friend of mine who is a cheif cook in a star hotel. This gentleman was hospitalised for a small head injury after a minor accident. The injury was neglected by doctors trying to find a unseen problems to put this gentleman into more expensive diagnosis. The neglected head injury got complicaed and the patients right eyes started getting septic and finally the gentleman lost his eye.

To save eye the doctor started administering high dosage of antibiotics and his kidney gave away.. now this gentleman is on dialysis. The bill for last 3months have crossed 20lakhs upcomming award winning young chef have fallen into debt. Now we do not know the fate the pateint who is forced to be in hospital. Now, tell me will not my friend be angry with the system? these doctors have not only destroyed the pateints life but brought a family in to punery. Our curse is on these doctors and their family must face the ugliest, targiest fate possible so that, they learn the lesson. If the govt cannot bring in the systems and give jsutice then we have not option but to curse them. In this position I hope my friend had someeone like ramasene to break open the doctors head.

Hey guys...why dont we try to even think of it that even though these kind of incidents happen sometimes but still there are plenty of other good works that hospitals and doctors do.Why doesnt media highlight those things? If out of a 100 cases even if one or two patients being treated its not the mistake or negligience of the hospital..whoever the patient maybe a hindu a muslim or a christian..

Lets please talk of humanity guys...please.. Atleast lets play for the soul of the deceased instead of blaming the doctors or the government or anybody.I feel pity on peoples mentality who connect everything to politics especially the educated ones who comment here...Please for gods sake lets be humans first and most importantly stop blaming doctors and stop these rowdism activities in the name of social service..Nothing can be achieved by force..NOTHING..!!!

looks like Saldhana is secretary of Aruna Roy who was a principle of member of NCA who drafted communal voilence bill. well madam, if this bill is brought in to legilation .. every single person who calls himself as a majority can rest his life inside the dungeon not seeing the light of the day.

even members of NCA are accepting that, there are lots of amendments required after a thorough debate involing every section of the society. recently Nitish Kumar CM of Bihar who is said to be a secular and good politician and who have won the NDTV award for 2010 has also objected the said bill.

I think you must have a good look at it. Moreover, every communal voilence is not the doing of hindus in this country.. there are other sides also. how can you justify while person of particular community (minor) who enters into a house of an hindu and creates a problem or robs them is beaten and the entire family been put behind bars under this draconain bill?

there are many such issues in this bill and you cannot rule out misuse of it in this country. As TADA or POTA was misused even ths bill can be misused. Instead we must ask for total reform of police force which do not come under any politicians. The ion of Police and Teaching class must not come under any reservation policy. Only people from a excellent back ground and highly qualified candicates must get this job. Police and teaching job must be one of the highly paid job in the country.

Krishnaraj, I would like to add something more... the medical transript of every patient must be available to be obtained from any hospitals by claiming so. Either any individual patients (citizen) going under a treatment where ever in the country .. govt hospital, private hospital or little clinic there must be a specific health record for every citizen right from the birth untill one dies..these records must be obtaineed online maintained by Medical council under direct supervision of health ministry. who ever treats a patients where ever in this country the treatment procedure must be automatically uploaded , so that it would be easy to find out any errors. we have seen many deaths and disablity due to doctors neglegence or just because they do not know the job well. These doctors are sometimes very egoistic and never wants to talk to patients properly. they treat patients like a subject not aware of any soul in them. If a patients or their relative get a proper answers for their questions or justice in case of prroblems... most of the attacks on hospitals will be reduced. be it rama sene and any sene.

I am educated and I have mediclaim and I know how it works. During admission to hospital you are asked how much is your mediclaim worth? If you say 3 lacs the hospital will see that your final bill is 3 lacs. Most of the medical insurance companies canceled cashless policies and d a few hospitals from their list of approved hospitals. I don’t say all doctors are bad but some are worst than our Reddy and Yeddy.

    Don't always BLAME doctors only.
The SYSTEM- is not right in Mangalore.
The CONCEPT of Family Doctor is gone now, who were able to identify any disease with their Experience without any major expensive tests.
They used to treat all the family members 24 hours of the day. They knew the full family medical history & they took apropriate medical intervention only if needed.
Now a days we directly go to a specialist thinking we are getting the best medical treatment from the MD.
Who has very little time to give you- & rights down expensive medical tests which will help him should you file any cases later as well as they have acut in all those patients he refers to the Labs, to recover the crores his parents invested on him.
Now the question is who patronised specialists over Family Doc. Or like in a song Video Killed Radio Star- We killed the practice & concept of our age old necessity.
Ask BM Hegde & he will answer all your queries- sometimes they are blunt & would cut both the sides equally!

    People,

This is a complex issue,,, some of the things can be safely said here...

1 Some of the physicians are greedy and try to suck patients, especially rich and gullible.

2 Rama Sene is looking for trouble to make a quick buck out of it,,, and to show their presense.

3.Local ruling party politicians turn a blind eye or Wink seeking their support during next elections.

4.Even though Government Wenlock Hospital might be good,,, many of the patients are afraid to go there.

5.Finally life and death is in Gods hands,,, physicians are just a tool in the hands of God Almighty.

6.If BJP looses power in next elections,,, CONgress will indulge in full time corruption( Like hungry dog not eaten food for days attacking food once it sees it!!!),,, however RS will run for cover.......

7.If BJP leaders want they can open a Desk in Police Commissioners Office for Rama Sene leaders,,, instead of touble talk....

    Jai Hoooooooooooooooooooooooo

Thanks for Good positive comments on my views. Well when some people support my view and few partially disagree.

As Dr.Raghav says Wenlock hospital is the best hospital he ever seen, I would like to let you all know, If my memory is right, its the same hospital where the Lokayukt Raid taken place couple years back and found lots of expired drugs in the Wenlock WELL. Also its a same hospital Where lots of ministers warned and showed dis-satisfaction about hospitals function.

However Its not a question of POOR and RICH, Patients who admit is Pvt hospitals Does not give License to LOOT them. It is Totally Unfair for any hospitals charge different rates for General ward and Special Ward. And No Doubt There are many doctors who suggest for Surgery for small pity issues which in turn can be solved through medication. Also There are some cases Where the DEAD bodies have been kept in hospital for more than 2-3 days after the death of the patient with the intention of raising the bill ( No Proof, But I heard it from the NURSE)

Again I say There are few Good Doctors who work very Ethically, But If i ask this question to some one " HOW MANY SUCH Doctors " The Probable Answer I may get will be in Single digit figure.

I again repeat my statements, This is my personal view and not written to Harm Anyone or to justify anyone.

MR. KRISHNARAJ: You have explained in detail about the current crisis faced with the medical industry of India. The real estate price and the medical expenses are skyrocketing in India on a daily basis. Anything when skyrocketed, after reaching certain altitude, then forced to crash in a far worse
speed like the U.S. real estate is faced with today.

Now the medical insurance companies in the U.S. are very strict and limit their payments while paying the bills to the doctors and hospitals, so the medical industry is also caught up with the recession.

i dont agree fully with mr krishnaraj. u wrote in too much detail about what u feel but u r not fully correct. i m a doctor and i know the ground reality. its true that some hospitals charge too much but they give care accordingly and its only for rich. there r many hospitals where anyone can afford treatment.and in mangalore a poor patient can go to wenlock hospital which has all facilities available and u get 24 hours care by doctors. trust me wenlock is the best govt hosp i have ever seen in my life. and then about ur comment on many docotrs seeing a patient.. so nowdays there is so much of medicolegal cases coming up against doctors that they have to keep themsleves safe. later if a patient dies he will make life of a dcotor miserable and court will ask why expert opinion was not sought. that time patient's relative will tell that we never had money problem but doctor has not taken opinion of specialists.. so u see the problems at our end too..

If it's true that the media was present even before the Sene, then the media will also have to take a fair share of the blame.
Sene does these type of stunts for publicity and care two hoots for the patient or his family. By accompanying the goons and publishing their (mis)deeds, the media is only encouraging such activities.
Its time the media refuses take the bait for a few bytes and leave such hyper-activism to fade on its own.

Its a very general Opinion if we ask 100 people atleat 95 percent of the people agree that these days Doctors does not follow Ethics ( ofcourse some doctors DO ) our law does not entertain the patients to fight lawfully whenever doctors go wrong & most of the time We cannot have a Proof for everything. They use the weakness of the patients. for Example There are several Cases where one doctor says only medical treatment enough to cure STONEs, Where as there are many doctors Urge the patients to under go Surgery. this is mainly due to personal interest and not due to servicing the patient.
However I personally feel this is mainly because a steep increase in of cost in Education. These days Getting a MD degree will cost nearly a CORE. and the momenet doctors finish their education their first motto will be to get back the money they spent (Invested) for their education.I Firmly feel Govt should take a Step to reduce the Cost of Education and Also pass a LAW that, if any patient dies in Hospital Then the Hospital should waive off all the SERVICE CHARGES levied to the patient as a Good Gesture. Let them charge only the actual amount they spent for Medical tablets, Bloods, ETC.

This is just my Opinion & Not written in view of justifying or defending or harming anyone.

These days Hospital treatment becoming more like a business rather than Service, the moment one get admitted to the hospital one will become a victim of COMMISSION.Commission plays a major role in hospitals,If the patients admit to a hospital through ambulance service, then the Ambulance driver get a commission, if i the patient get a reference by a local doctor, then that Doctor gets a Commission. If the patient admits in a hospital for a week time, then all the doctors such a neurologist, cardiologist etc etc comes for atleast one round of checkup of the patient with a intention of Commission or you can call it as a TIPS.. If the Patient admitted in a General Ward then ONE rate of for diabetes,BP, Operation, etc & if the same patient admitted in a Special WARD,then for the same treatement The Charges almost Doubles. HOWS & WHY IS IT ? does the medical expences goes up just because he is been admitted to special ward ? The patient obiously pays for the special ward an Extra Cost. then why does the Medical treatement charges go up ?
Let me give an Example: A patient advised to undergo Dialysis and a doctor charges him a Rs 10,000 for the first sitting there after Rs 900- 1000 every sitting. If the Patient decides to chage the Hospital for the preceding Dialysis just because timings are not suitable to him,the Same doctor again Chae him a Rs 3000 as a Service Charge again in new hospital HOw fair is this ? Doctoring is a big business and govt must pass some law to stop it

This is a despicable act on the part of Rama Sene, taking law into their hands and going on a abusing spree without sufficient cause! I agree with Dr. Kamath that people need to have medical insurance in view of the highly increasing costs of medical treatment. But there is no denying the fact that hospitals like other businesses can stoop to any level to fleece the maximum money from gullible patients!

Please keep these anti-social elements out of these Medico-legal cases- as all legal avenues are open to the agrieved parties.
Doctors are not "Brahmas" to write anybodies "ayush" or terminate the same. Docotrs have their own limitations-when patients reach them only after they cross critical stage- they have tried their Best in this case.
Taking Law into their own hands must be discouraged by Politicians as well as these self-appointed protectors of culture must be dealt with severely to prevent future confrontations.
Are our Law makers & Law Keepers LISTENING.

I appreciate the Efforts of the Hospital authorities .similar Kind of Treatment in Mumbai would cost not less than Rs 1,50,000 in Mumbai .I request everybody to go for Medical insurance rather than blame Doctors or Hospital .If they still Cry about fees let them open and hospital and see how difficult to run a hospital without proper Funds .
