Bantwal, March 15: As much as Rs 25,70,918 worth of goods have been recovered from the accused under custody pertaining to a theft that took place at Adyanadka branch of a private bank in the Vitla police station limits.
Superintendent of Police Rishyanth announced a cash prize to the team which conducted the operation.
The accused arrested are Mohammed Rafik alias Goodinabali Rafik (35), son of Ismail, resident near Juma Masjid, B Mooda grama, Bantwal, Ibrahim Khalandar (41), son of Abdul Kunhi, resident of Uppala Mogral, Manjeshwar taluk and Dayanand S (37), son of late Aitha, resident of Bayaru grama, Manjeshwar taluk.
The other two who were involved in the theft are absconding.
The thieves broke into the bank after breaking the rods at the backside of the bank and stole jewellery and cash worth several lacs of rupees. This theft came to light on February 8.
The accused who fled to Kerala after the theft later separated and went to other places. The rear portion of the bank is covered with shrubs. The thieves who came that way used a saw to cut metal and broke into the bank. A sum of Rs 17,28,735 in cash, 696.21 grams of jewellery and Rs 1 lac worth silver was reportedly stolen.
The thieves were then able to open four safe deposit lockers in the bank that was owned by the customers. Their efforts to cut the safe locker that contained pledged gold by a gas cutter was however unsuccessful.
The thieves stole gold and silver ornaments from two safe deposit lockers out of four opened by them.
A complaint in this regard was filed with Vitla police station.
The special police team who took the case seriously, conducted investigations and arrested the accused. As much as Rs 2,40,700 in cash, household items bought with Rs 2 lacs, jewellery worth Rs 12,48,218, a brezza car bearing registration No. KA-01 NG 2227, a gas cutter and other goods were confiscated from the accused. The total value of the goods confiscated from them is Rs 25,70,918.
Two cases at Bantwal town police station, two cases at Venur police station, one case in Mangaluru east police station, one case in Ullal police station, one case at Puttur police station, four cases at Mangaluru south police station, one case at Mangaluru rural police station, six cases at Bengaluru, one case at Mangaluru east police station, three at Udupi and one case at Vitla police station have been registered against Mohammed Rafik alias Goodinabali Rafik.
Two cases at Puttur rural police station, three cases at Vitla police station, one case at Uppinangady police station, one case at Moodbidri police station, one case at Kumble, Kerala are registered against Ibrahim Khalandar.
This is the first case against Dayanand S. A search is on to find the remaining two accused. Police have said that they will be arrested soon.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Vitla station inspector Nagaraj H by police sub-inspector Nandakumar, Udaya Ravi, Harish Kumar, Vidya K J, staff Venkataramana Gowda, Pravin Moorugoli, Udaya Rai, Rakshit Rai, Pravin Rai Palthadi, Adrama, Karunakara, Rahul Rao, Sridhar C S, Jagadish Athaje, Hemaraj, Ashok, Vivek K, Kumar H K, Sampath Diwaker, Santhosh Kumar Mayappa under guidance from SP C B Rishyanth, additional SP Dharmappa N M and Rajendra D S.
