Udupi, Mar 25: A leopard attacked a man while he was sleeping on the veranda of a house, seriously injuring him on Sunday night in Kallottu under Shirva gram panchayat limits.
The injured man, Surendra (55), a native of Bihar, works as a labourer in sand extraction from the river. Surendra was sleeping on the veranda of the house belonging to Savita Rajesh, the Shirva gram panchayat president, when the leopard attacked him.
Surendra sustained serious injuries to his cheeks, chin, and face. He was rushed to Ajjarkad government hospital, where he is currently being treated. Reports indicate that the leopard that attacked Surendra was accompanied by its cub.
Leopard sightings have become increasingly common in Kallottu, Sorpu, Agolibailu, and Padavu areas, causing fear among the villagers. Just two days ago, a leopard preyed on two domestic dogs owned by Sangeeta Naika.
In November 2023, a leopard preyed on the domestic dog of Devanna Nayak from Kallottu and left its half-eaten carcass near the jasmine plant in the house.
