Bantwal, Apr 3: It is normal for us to grumble about the rising temperature and the perspiration but the children from the government school here were drying 'Sandige' delicacies in the sunshine. 'Sandige' is a local delicacy prepared from rice or garlic.
This was one of the school activities held for two days at Moodambail Government Higher Primary School. The annual examinations got over in between this confusion. School teacher Shruthi thought about an extracurricular activity to teach the children in between their election duties and taught the children to prepare 'Sandiges'.
The children who learned to prepare 'Sabbakki Sandige' with 'Sagu' under the supervision of teacher Shruthi dried 'Sandige' on the leaf of a tree in a pattern.
The children who learned to prepare 'Sabakki Sandige' on the first day, said that they will prepare them at home. As one of the girls said that they do not have 'Sagu' at home, the teacher had taught her to prepare onion and garlic 'Sandige' with rice. As the tree leaves dried up in the sunshine before the 'Sandige' on the first day, the children spread Sandige on food grade plastic sheets.
While we are inclined to coloured junk food, 40 children gladly learnt to prepare 'Sandiges' at home. Other teachers also joined them.
Teacher Shruthi said that the children were keenly listening while she explained the recipe to prepare 'Sandige'. Aravind Kudla, the headmaster said that he has plans to distribute hot 'Sandiges' for lunch on the day of Samudayadatta Shale day, April 8.
Ritwik, a seventh standard student said that he was happy to prepare 'Sabakki' and 'rice Sandige'.
