Beltangady, April 11: A Sakleshpura-based straw trader was carrying straw in a mini lorry at Battemar, Kalia gram panchayat limits here to the house of a dairy farmer when it accidentally caught fire.
A passer-by raised an alarm. The mini lorry driver stopped his vehicle near the residence of the local farmer Purandara Naika who sprayed water on it through a tube well pipe.
Meanwhile, members of Battemar SSFKMJSYS organisation and locals brought water from their houses and tried to douse the fire. A local Anganwadi worker also joined in the efforts. The fire intensified due to the sweltering heat of the sunshine. But youngsters ignored it and joined in the efforts to douse the fire.
Meanwhile, a local ward member Abdul Kareem Gerukatte who received the information summoned the local fire brigade. The fire brigade arrived and doused the fire.
Vinay Prasad who was working nearby shoved away the grass from the mini lorry that had caught fire with his excavator. Panchayat staff Ravi and Suresh Gowda also helped him.
The teary eyed lorry driver expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped him and averted a major catastrophe.
