Mangalore: Apologies to a Labourer, Korean Style!

Mangalore: Apologies to a Labourer, Korean Style!

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (PS)

Mangalore, Oct 9:
An engineer of Korean nationality, who assaulted a local labourer working in SEZ and later apologised, was the centre of all attention here on Saturday October 8, not exactly for the apology, but the amusing manner in which he did it!

It was rather a rare sight in this part of the world to see the foreign national bend his knees, fall to the ground and apologise to a labourer, and for sure, it took everyone by surprise.

Here's what happened. A company which has taken up some work on contract basis from ISPRL has been working with both Indian and Korean engineers. There had been some complaint from a labourer against a Korean engineer, Kim, alleging arrogant behaviour. Based on the complaint, Kim was also given a warning.

On Saturday at 4.30 am, Kim who came to the site is said to have assaulted one Chandrahas, a resident of Kinnigoli (also an SEZ victim) with helmet and torch, compelling him to work. Moreover, it is alleged that he insulted him stating 'Indians are beggars'. Furious at this, labourers in hundreds demonstrated till 11 am in front of his office. Initially he did not turn up, but once he feared the possibility of an assault on him, he came out and apologised, bending his knees and touching his head to the ground.

The labourers, somewhat amused as well as taken aback, withdrew their protest and Chandrahas was admitted to hospital. No information is available yet on what action the higher authority has taken against Kim.

Worked with Koreans for quite long time in middle east I have good experience to share.Generally they are good.Their strength is hard work.Their technical skills are average same as us but they are dare devils in engineering construction. They lack of communication skills in English.Sample of communication like this.I Korean man, know small English,We push work,You come my office, after small discuss ....I no agree you.Who manager you or me,I Korea understand?...aaish...Skikya....so on.Last two words are abusive, but they use similar words often. They always maintain super ego and consider Indians as inferior. In Korean companies Koreans and Indians given different status though both are given same tasks.I have never seen a single Korean wasting time during duty hours. They maintain good productivity rate working in 10 hours shift. They never mix sentiments with work always positive minded.Incident at Mangalore is unfortunate. This Korean is so cheap minded to insult Indian national. It is crime to assault co-worker.Our greatness is in forgiving.

"INDIA IS HAVING ABUNDANT QUALIFIED PERSON."
For many turn-key project, infrastructure projects on joint ventures, getting foreign workers is unavoidable. If you have objections on these kind of arrangements, you can ask your BJP to boycott foreign employees when they come to power in Center. However, it will also boomerang on us if all other nations boycott Indian workers. Be sensible while commenting pseudo.

Thank you Mr.K.Ismail for expressing true opinion.I am a malayali by birth, brought up as kannadiga..my heart is Indian..always Indian. I support neither kannadiga nor malayali. Good and Bad people everywhere is present. My suggestion is not to hurt others sentiments. In simple "Think twice before jump " .Anyway, subject matter is Korean apology. I liked his apology style..but he should be punished for hurting Indian sentiments.

Yes I was referring to religious fight in Mangalore every time (even in Daiji column). Can you deny it? If any bomb explodes in Delhi or Jaipur, then Mangalore police and district administration stand on their toes !They are expecting religious fight. Can you deny it ? That itself shows weak weak minded of people.Because no good faith, trust among hindu, christian & muslims. But you hardly see these type of fights in kerala. Please don't talk like a frog in the well. A Korean calling us all as beggars is insulting we Indians in our own land is not acceptable. His apology may work as we pardon all as our God pardons all our trespasses upon apology. But, But, it doesn't mean that we do not have beggars. We have enough of them. Its all because of our greedy politicians.
One thing I want to admit that the weakness of we Indians is we really don't take the work seriously. When others work hard, we work hardly. This is the reality.

Read ur comments about weak minded mentality of Mangloreans, it is very true because if it was not so then no Mangloreans would have allowed any Malyali to settle in Manglore or any where in Karnataka, instead of thanking the Mangloreans that because of their acceptance U people are getting Jobs and settling grounds over here U are criticising them, Ms. Jaimini imagine if the people of Karnataka had not accepted U then U have to find ur job in Kerala only, if u can't accept the people around u who gave u place among themselves then I think u need to stay back in Kerala with ur closed minds and hearts.Do try to help others when the people from this state have accepted u so well.

I would say we all are begger someway the other. the only think we dont realize about it..no matter how rich we are and no matter what extended wealth we have.. but still we are begger... not only we indians, but the whole world is beggars.why we are beggers?....yes.. every minute of our life and every second of our life is in the hands of God.he can do what he wants to with our life.so every second we have to beg to him to save our life and guide us to eternal life.so are we not all beggers? only thing that we forget sometimes that we are complte with everything.the fact is simply forgive and forget, that is the best indian to be...

Very good gesture by Korean Engineer..but he should be punished not only for assaulting worker & but also for hurting Indians sentiments.
What hurt me (more than korean) was Ruchi's comment.According to Ruchi,Keralites will go to any extent to get their work done.Ruchi should remember that Mangaloreans have not come from heaven !

We can see here, how nicely readers are fighting for religion & god.No unity at all. That itself shows how weak minded Mangaloreans are. Malayalis are UNITED.hindu,muslim,christian..they fight problems together.Malayali hindu will try for Malayali Muslim to get a job here.& vice versa. But non Malayalis dont like this. They are jealous.Thats why people like RUCHI comment in this manner. Finally, many thanks to Daiji for a very good article about Korean syle apology.I dont want Ruchi to apologise in Korean style..but a SORRY will give a good message.

In Korean culture (which is similar to India culture), bending knees and bowing is the highest form of paying respect and is usually done to pray to god, respect to elders or apologize. The engineer seems to be really sorry for what he has done. Hope he is forgiven.

    The Korean engineer's assault on
the Indian employee was very rude: based on his arrogant attitude
he must pay the penalty for it.

On the other hand, bending down and touching the floor shows that he is genuine in his sorrow for
    the serious mistake he did.

Many people won't show an attitude of telling even a "sorry" in these
days, but his attitude is far
surprising and touching our conscience. We all can learn something out of it to create a better society of peace and honest confession.
