SC set to pass directions on pleas seeking mandatory EVM-VVPAT tally

New Delhi, Apr 24 (IANS): The Supreme Court is slated to pass certain directions on Wednesday on a batch of petitions seeking mandatory cross-verification of the votes cast in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips.

As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, the issue is listed before a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta “for directions” on April 24.

Last week, the Bench had reserved its verdict on a batch of public interest litigations (PILs) in the matter, observing that official acts are normally presumed to be done validly under the Indian Evidence Act and everything done by the Election Commission cannot be suspected.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, the second highest law officer of the Centre, had slammed the petitioners for periodically filing PILs on the eve of elections saying that the democratic choice of a voter is being turned into a joke.

The SG added that the issue has already been settled by the apex court with the dismissal of the pleas seeking similar relief in the past.

In April 2019, the Supreme Court ordered the ECI to increase the VVPAT slips from one Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) per Assembly constituency to five. It had issued guidelines for mandatory verification of VVPAT slips, out of five randomly selected polling stations, after completing the final round of counting votes recorded in EVMs.

A VVPAT is considered an independent verification system for voting machines, allowing voters to verify whether they have correctly cast their votes.

If SC passes the ruling for 100% VVPAT then there will be mass exodus of BJP leaders into congress as the rats sense sinking of ship. BJP is fully exposed here and no longer a safe heaven for criminals. These defected criminals be rather good since thier sins have been washed by BJP and enjoy victory in congress party as there is nothing left in BJP.

My opinion is that, first declare results quickly based on evm registerd votes. Next day onwards count all vvpat votes and declare its results as well. Both will match. It will clear all doubts on evm permanently. No worries shortage of man power officials. We have plenty of officials there to count vvpat slips. Ok

Tampering EVM is criminal and must amount to treason. Treason implies death sentence. Any agency, engineers or govt servants, actively engaging in such act must desist from it. EC claims EVMs are tamper-proof. Claiming any electronic equipment as tamper-proof, is utter ignorence. There are enough electronics and softwares, to steal money from bank accounts, that too of unknown people, they can do so even for votes. EC should have come up with a self diagnostic solution. A diagnostic solution which is ratified by experts out side of EC, represented by all parties to monitor as well through several tests and trials, with any random samples anywhere in the country.

ELECTION COMMISSION SHOULD ALLOW TO THOSE CANDITATE WHO WANT TO VERIFY EVM- VVPAT TALLY, BY PAYING SOME FEES (EXPENSES INCURE FOR THE PROCESS). IF THERE IS ANY VARIATION THEN THAT FEES SHOULD BE REFUNDED. AND ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN ON THOSE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT.
