PM Modi has lifted 400 million people out of poverty: JP Morgan CEO

New Delhi, Apr 24 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken 400 million (40 crore) people out of poverty and is doing an “unbelievable job” in India, Global banking giant JP Morgan Chase chief executive officer (CEO) Jamie Dimon has said.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Economic Club of New York on Tuesday, Dimon lauded the economic reforms implemented by the Modi government and said some of them could be introduced in the US as well.

“Modi has done an unbelievable job in India. I know the liberal Press here, they beat the hell out of him when he’s taken 400 million people out of poverty,” Dimon remarked.

He complimented PM Modi for his resilience in challenging outdated bureaucratic systems, calling him "tough".

The leading banker referred to PM Modi as a "tough" administrator for breaking outdated bureaucratic systems in India and said, “We need a little bit more of that here (in the US)."

The 68-year-old banker also lauded India’s GST regime, which he said has removed corruption emanating from the disparity in tax systems followed by different states.

Dimon highlighted India's advancements in technology and finance, noting the widespread adoption of digital identification and banking services, with over 700 million citizens having bank accounts.

“Every citizen by hand or eyeball or by finger is recognised. They've bank accounts for 700 million people. Their transferred payments are going through," he pointed out.

The banker also praised India's education system and infrastructure, describing them as "unbelievable."

Sometimes i wonder what the guy was smoking when he says that 40 crore people were lifted out of poverty when 80 crore people have to be given rations for the next 5 years. Maybe JP Morgan CEO is thinking that all the business they are getting from India is through the common people who cannot get two proper meals a day or from the 80% of the youth in India who are currently without any employment.

In India, in the year 2011, the poverty line was defined by the Suresh Tendulkar Committee. It was determined on the basis of monthly expenses on food, education, health, transport and electricity. According to this committee, a person who is spending Rs. 33 a day in urban areas and only Rs. 27 a day in rural areas live below the poverty line.

Very right. In terms of benchmark numbers that Rs. 27 and Rs. 33, certainly those no looks crazy and outdated. The no defined previously, that is too before Yr. 2011, was still below that is Rs. 11. USD at those times, was at Rs.40. In usual terms, living in a dollar per day, was what talked about around the world. Today, USD is over 83 against Rs. But, the numbers Rs. 27 and Rs. 33, still remains as benchmarks.

Surely Jamie Dimon is brain washed so JP Mogan gets favours from the Govt! Why isn't the External Affairs Ministry saying that JP Morgan Chase chief executive officer (CEO) Jamie Dimon should not interfere in the internal affairs of India?

Of 132cr population, India had around 20cr poor in 2014. Now to say in 2024, 40cr people are bought out of poverty in 10yrs, is outlandish lie. Even assuming 20cr no was wrong and actual no. was 40cr, that means, none remained poor in India. Now, here the catch, who the 80cr poor people Modi led BJP, claims to be feeding free?.

foreign entity speaking in praise of Modiji definitely has some ulterior motive... No doubt Modiji has carried the legacy forward but how much he has fast tracked is a big question.... Either the old banker has post 60 syndrome or he is prompted by receivables... Education system is something Modiji has not moved much at all and also employment front contribution is negligible...
