Mangaluru, Apr 27: The country's 13th Blue Flag beach has been developed on the Tannirbhavi shoreline here, and an entry fee has been established. While the number of tourists is increasing, locals are expressing objections to the fee imposition.
"Entrance fee collection has commenced. Tourist arrivals are high, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. An entrance gate is being constructed under the Smart City project, which will enhance its appeal," said Manikya, deputy director of the tourism department.
During the work in progress
During a district tourism development committee meeting, discussions were held regarding the management of the cold water Blue Flag beach. However, the election code of conduct is impeding the tender process for hiring staff for fee collection, hence, BVJ India Ltd has been directed to temporarily collect the fee.
"This beach is exceptionally clean and well-maintained. There are no issues with payment integrity. However, the government should provide better facilities," remarked Ashalatha, a tourist from Uttara Kannada.
"We used to visit the beach without any hindrances. Do we now need to pay for minimal development? Should we require permission to access our own beach? Locals should be granted free entry," opined Mohan from Boloor.
Pune-based BVG India Ltd has been contracted for Rs 7.56 crore for Blue Flag beach work. Additionally, a solid waste treatment plant and gray water treatment plant have been constructed to maintain cleanliness along the one-kilometre-long Blue Flag beach area. Other amenities include toilets, changing rooms, wood polymer composite pathways, a first aid room, a CCTV control room, cameras covering five sides, a drinking water system, and comfortable seating.
Construction of a safe swimming zone located 400 meters from the sea, two watchtowers for surveillance, and display of beach facilities at the park entrance have also been completed. The Dakshina Kannada Tourism Development Committee has released a rate card for various services offered at tourism sites. Entry for individuals aged 13 and above is priced at Rs 20, while those below 13 pay Rs 10. Photography services, including standard photo shoots and drone photography, are priced at Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000, respectively. Film shooting rates vary depending on the language, with Tulu language films priced at Rs 5,000 and films in other languages at Rs 10,000. Event hosting services, such as birthday celebrations and marriage ceremonies, are available for Rs 500 and Rs 15,000, respectively. Commercial programs can be hosted for Rs 20,000. Additional amenities include shower baths for Rs 10, parking fees ranging from Rs 10 to Rs. 50 depending on the vehicle, toilet usage for Rs 5, and recliner chair rentals at Rs 100 per hour.
Manikya, the official, stated, "The Blue Flag beach work at Tannirbhavi has been completed, and the entry fee has been established. Tourist numbers are rising, and while some objections have been raised, we aim to address them in the near future."
