New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday told Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa that Tamil Nadu's industrialisation plans would be impacted by the unavailability of power if the Kudankulam nuclear project were to be scrapped.

Singh, in a letter to Jayalalithaa, said that of the 2,000 MW of power to be generated by the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project units 1 and 2, the allocation of power to Tamil Nadu is 925 MW.

"In case the prospects of availability of this power are suddenly withdrawn, this would impact on the state's development and industrialisation plans," he said in the letter, which also recalled his assurances to a delegation from Tamil Nadu led by Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O. Paneerselvam.

The delegation from Tamil Nadu had met the prime minister a week ago over safety concerns regarding the Kudankulam power plant.

Ahead of the meeting with the delegation, the prime minister had written another letter to Jayalalithaa, seeking her help in getting the power project implemented and assuring that the government attached great importance to safety with regard to nuclear projects.

In the latest letter, Singh said he had separately directed the Department of Atomic Energy to maintain close liaison with the local people, the local authorities and the state government.

"I look forward to your continuing support for the Kudankulam project," he said.
