Bangalore, Oct 13: Finally, Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah has accepted the resignation of former Health Minister and close associate of Bellary mining barons Reddy brothers, B Sriramulu as a member of the State Legislative Assembly.

According to highly placed sources in the State Secretariat, the Speaker has accepted the resignation of Sriramulu on Thursday.

Sriramulu, who was denied a ministerial berth along with the Bellary Reddy brothers after being specifically named by the former Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde in his final report submitted to the State Government on illegal mining in the State following the resignation of former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and his replacement by Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha member D V Sadananda Gowda, had announced his decision to quit the Assembly on September 4.

Sriramulu went all the way to Madikeri to Bopaiah’s residence and waited for him for hours together to personally submit the resignation letter.

However, the Speaker had not accepted the resignation and had sought clarifications from the former minister.

Sriramulu, however, had repeatedly declared even in public platforms that he would not withdraw his resignation. His supporters, however, had demanded that the Speaker should not accept the resignation and that Sriramulu should be inducted in the Sadananda Gowda cabinet.

But the State Advocate General B V Acharya had, in informed the State Government in writing that Sriramulu could not be inducted into the cabinet as he was specifically indicted by the Lokayukta report besides recommending that action should be taken against Sriramulu and the Bellary mining lords, G Janardhana Reddy and G Karunakara Reddy, who were cabinet ministers in the Yeddyurappa team.

Sriramulu represented the Bellary rural constituency in iron-ore rich Bellary district.

Before submitting his resignation, Sriramulu addressed a largely attended news conference at the five-star Hotel Lalith Ashok to announce his resignation. He had said: “I am mentally disturbed. I am resigning from the Assembly as my image has been damaged following the Lokayukta report.”

Ismailji, What ever BJP did(operation lotus) was done by Congress long back with Narayana Rane and his supporters in Maharastra. Horse trading and cross voting (like Sangliayana and Manrama Madwaraj) is the gift of CONG. AFter that cash for votes. If operation lotus undermines democratical system, same applies to CONG deeds starting from 1991's JMM case (dont want rewind too much) to Cash for votes case. Always put unbiased opinion and dont be biased and one sided. Both CONG and BJP are two faces of the same coin.

Karunakara, Somashekhara and Janardhan Reddy along with B. Sriramulu (a close associate and virtually a part of the family) played a crucial role in first helping the BJP garner 110 seats, and later by playing a key role in securing the support of the six independents to help Yeddyurappa realise his dream of heading the first BJP government in Karnataka. It is reported that the Reddy brothers, who made their millions mining iron ore, paid the independent candidates Rs 25 crore each in return for their support to the BJP government. Not that Yeddyurappa is unaware of the Reddy brothers’ financial contribution to the party coffers or their presence in Bellary and its neighbouring districts. Three of the four kingmakers have been granted ministerial berths. Besides Bellary district, the Reddy brothers’ concentrated on the neighbouring districts of Davangere, Gadag and Haveri.
During the campaign, Sriramulu, who finally won the Bellary seat, was twice arrested by the police before being released on bail. The first incident that he was implicated in was the burning of Congress candidate Anil Lad’s cars on April 18. A month later, on May 15, a day before Bellary went to the polls, Sriramulu was charged with assaulting a Congress worker on the outskirts of the city. Nani, the Congress worker, was found unconscious following the assault and had to be hospitalised. Sriramulu in his nomination affidavit has already admitted to having criminal charges pending against him.
