Mangaluru, May 9: An American youth with a keen interest in learning different languages has mastered Kannada and Tulu while residing in the USA through online studies.

Samuel Dragomire, the 23-year-old enthusiast, acquired proficiency in both Kannada script and conversation, as well as Tulu conversation, solely through online resources, without the aid of any tutor. Some of Samuel's Shetty and Poojary friends facilitated his rapid grasp of the Tulu language.

Samuel is so adept in Tulu that he seamlessly incorporates Tulu words into conversations with Tuluvas, even when they use English. When asked in Tulu, ‘Moolu Mosquitoes Unda?’ he responds, ‘Umil Undu’.

Affectionately known as Sam, he arrived in Bengaluru just a week ago and plans to visit Mangaluru shortly. His boundless curiosity for language and culture motivates him to delve deeper into Tulu language and Tulunadu's culture during his anticipated four- to five-month stay in Mangaluru. He openly shares his joyous journey of learning Tulu and Kannada languages on his YouTube channel.

Currently pursuing an MS in Data Analytics Engineering at North Eastern University, Sam is also proficient in Portuguese. On his YouTube channel, he mentions his ongoing learning journey in Kannada and has established a separate channel dedicated to Tulu language.

    Must be a linguist. I have come across such genius now and then. Don't forget our late PM Narasimha Rao. I know a Pilipino Priest who knows several languages fluently, ofcourse not Indian language. It is talent given by God and pursued to excellence by these individuals. God Bless him

    It’s always foreigners who uplift native languages. Indians learn English more than British likewise American learns to and Kannada. Foreigners have made more contribution to Kannada, Tulu and Konkani. Kannan dictionary was written by German missionaries . Konkani grammar was written by Jesuit missionaries. Like the saying goes “a prophet is never respected in his own home town”

    It is truly heart wrenching to witness the plight of children whose parents never had the opportunity to receive a formal education. It is even more disheartening to see that these children are often unable to speak their native languages, such as Konkani, Tulu, or Kannada.

    While many of our Mangalorean children whose parents are settled in Bombay and other Metro Cities in India, hardly speak in their mother tongues, such as Tulu & Konkani. instead they prefer Hindi & English. Even if they speak, they speak like a foreigner speaks our language. How well our great celebrities speak in Tulu? I don't mind thier using other languages but I do mind when they ignore their mother tongues. I salute this Samuel for showing great interest in our languages.

    Yes, it is the most ancient and authentic Dravidian language. Unfortunately, Tuluvas themselves have largely overlooked it. Additionally, there has been significant neglect from both the State government of Karnataka and the Central government. We seek assistance from the English community to revitalize our language and culture. Tuluvas have been influenced to believe that speaking Kannada is synonymous with being educated.
