Media Release

Mangalore, Oct 15: The IBM Centre for Excellence of AIMIT, St Aloysius College was inaugurated recently in the AIMIT Hall.

Lawrence Mohanraj, regional manager, South & West Academic Initiative from Chennai was the chief guest. In his address to the students, Mohanraj congratulated AIMIT for being one of the few Centres of Excellence of IBM in India, imparting very good computer education and having excellent infrastructural facilities.

"IBM has been a forward looking company. From a hardware company it has moved to be a software company and now a service oriented company," he said. The question he raised was, "IBM has completed a hundred years of existence, and what can IBM do for the next hundred years?"

He said that IBM wants to create a smarter planet by being in various fields like healthcare, transportation, communication, energy etc. Business analytics is one more field in which IBM would venture and convert information into insight. He said IBM believes in "letting go to grow".

Dr Ozzie Mascarenhas, chairman, MBA section of AIMIT spoke of Sam Palmisano, chairman and president of IBM who took IBM to the next level, from a hardware company to a software giant. Mentioning the book authored by Louis Gerstner, 'Who said Elephants Cannot Dance?' he spoke about the growth of IBM during the past few years.

Fr Denzil Lobo, director, AIMIT mentioned how St Aloysius College got into computer revolution when one of the alumni, Aubrey D'Souza donated the first computer back in 1987. Since then the Institue has grown in leaps and bounds, right now having the world class campus at Beeri.

He also talked about the various initiatives that have been taken and the MOUs drawn with various companies for training the IT students. He thanked IBM for selecting AIMIT to be a Centre for Excellence and said that the Institute will train students to be the best for the industry.

Prof Santhosh Rebello, dean, IT section of AIMIT welcomed the gathering.

The formal programme was followed by the inaugural of the lab for excellence.
