Puttur: Mother confesses to involvement in son's death by suffocation

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (MS)

Puttur, May 12: The statement provided by the mother of the deceased youth, who had been frequently causing disturbances in the neighbourhood under the influence of alcohol, confirmed that she herself had tightened a dog chain around his neck in an attempt to deal with her troublesome son.

Umavathi Shetty, the mother of the deceased youth Chethan, and her neighbour Yusuf have been arrested in connection with the case and have been remanded to 15 days of judicial custody.

Chethan had caused disturbances at home on the night of May 9 and then proceeded to his neighbour Yusuf’s house in the early hours of May 10, where he broke the window panes. Upon being informed of the situation by Yusuf, Umavathi rushed to the scene with a dog chain. It is alleged that she tied the chain around her son's neck and, with the assistance of her neighbour Yusuf, pulled him toward their home.

According to her confession to the police, Umavathi stated, “How much more will you harass me? Because of you, even our neighbours cannot live in peace. If you continue to live, it will be difficult for me. You should die." She recounted holding her son Chethan's legs tightly and asking Yusuf to tighten the dog chain around his neck. He died due to suffocation. In an attempt to conceal the murder, she falsely claimed that he had taken his own life and then transported him to Puttur government hospital.”

Initially, Umavathi lied to the police, claiming that Chethan had committed suicide. In her statement, she mentioned that Chethan had been consuming excessive alcohol for the past five years and was engaged in centering work. On May 9, Umavathi and other family members had advised him against his behaviour and retired to bed. On the morning of May 10, around 5 am, family members discovered him lying near the cow shed with a dog chain tied around his neck. They assumed that he had ended his life in frustration.

Upon examination, the police observed injury marks on his neck, back, waist, left arm, right shoulder, and shoulder. After intense interrogation, Umavathi confessed to the actual crime.

@Edward; Remember; there are many reasons for a person to become alcoholic 😞; some are because of unhealthy/insecure (PTSD) upbringing, family environment, peer pressure, depression/anxy, absolute insecurity of the future (in the downtrodden and havenots)or simply a genetic predisposition; also there are so many people who imbibing alcoholic drinks but only a few become compulsive alcoholics (allergy)..... this is a 360 degree view!!

Lot of Alcoholics have destroyed not just their lives but that of their families as well. If i was tue presiding judge in this case I wouldn't condemn or punish the mother. I can imagine what a mother would have gone through.

Edward kudla,am dont agree to your arguements.Who knows the what was the cause to be a drunker.?Instead of trying to kill him in this way specially a mother?WHy didnt she try to cure it the cause? When extreme ,could have taken him to unanymous alcoholic group or ask someones help.Of course to have alcoholic at home troubles ,to others and self home is a difficult task.He himself must have not realised the problems. However ,may his soul rest in peace. What mother had now out of this?SHE will go to jail.IS it worth? She lost her son for ever.
