Bantwal, May 17: A three-year-old child playing in the yard suddenly fell into a 30-foot-deep well in Sarapadi Hanchikatte on May 14. A youth passing by on a bike immediately jumped into the well and rescued the child from drowning. The daredevil act of the youth is widely appreciated by the public.
Abhishek (3), the son of Nonaiah Naik of Hanchikatte, is the boy who fell into the well. Umesh Naik, a resident of Matadabettu, is the youth who rescued the child.
The toddler, who was playing in the yard, suddenly jumped onto a net covering the well to prevent leaves and debris from falling in. The net tore, and the child fell into the well.

The child's mother and sister were the only ones at home. When they heard the sound of something falling into the well, they came out and were shocked to see the child drowning. Their house is very close to the road. Umesh Naik, who was passing by on his bike, heard the mother's screams and rushed to the well. He used an old, nearly torn rope to get down into the well. Meanwhile, Nonaiah Naik, the child's father, and two others arrived and lifted the child from the well with the help of another rope. Later, Umesh climbed out of the well.
If Umesh had not rescued the child in time, it is said the child would have drowned. The father of the child mentioned that his son had never gone near the well before. He believes providence sent Umesh, who rescued the boy in time. The child did not sustain any injuries.
Umesh's timely and brave act, without considering the risk to his own life, is being lauded by the villagers.
