Udupi, Oct 17: Due to the cancellation of expert committee meeting to discuss the UPCL related problems, which was supposed to be held today, the infuriated Raitha Sangha members protested in front of the DC’s office here on Monday October 17.

The Raitha Sangha members demanded reasons for the scheduled meeting to be cancelled and when the deputy commissioner refused to come out and explain, they entered inside the compound and staged protest.

Though the police intervened and requested any two representatives top go inside and talk to the DC, they refused saying that the problem of UPCL is affecting the whole people of the region and DC must come out and explain why there has been negligence in holding the meeting on the said day.

Finally the DC Dr M T Reju came out and managed to convince the furious protestors. He assured the Raitha Sangha members that the meeting would take place by October 31. The members, though were convinced also demanded that until the Government comes up with the solution to their problem UPCL should be shut down.

Raitha Sangha members Vijay Hegde, Shahidhar Shetty and Madhav Shetty among others were present during the protest.

We do not oppose any project anymore but, we are opposing the project destroying our livelihood, environment and our health. All that UPCL have to do is install a desalinator unit and use good water instead of throwing the saltiwater to their neighborhood. Build a proper ash pond so that, I do not pollute our fields, wells and destroy our plants. Remove those project money put into the private pockets and address these issues. With such a large population at stake we cannot install a 3rd grade systems use ultra modern ones or buy our land at the right price and releive us from the misery, even we can go 100miles away and talk everything that, pro developments brothers talk. But, now we are sorry our ### is on fire and we cannot stop jumping.

India has a golden opportunity to use the modern clean coal/fuel technologies. The wheel need not be re-invented by using the steam engine invented by James Watt. Need to find What was the basis for the ion for this technology and also the credentials of the people who allowed it! All the protests should happen at initiation. The building of the plant should always involve local voice and should be transparent.

POWER .. POWER ...POWER ..comes at a cost ..either to environment or to peoples well being . india has got only one option , now that nuclear plants are facing protests , thermal plants are facing protests , hydro plants are facing protests . with lack of electricity even load shedding is facing protests , we dont have enough resources to harvest solar power or wind power , the only option left is to the government to tell people , please produce your own power at your own cost , i think all these protests will end then . the only intresting thing i see in these protests are a few 6 packs and more family packs on display . we indians will never be satisfied with what we get .. its our birthright to protest against anything that doesnt satisfy our hunger and needs and doesnt come cheap in a platter , nobody wants to work for progress and harmony, everyone is intrested in filling his own coffers including me .. jai Ho

    Dear George/Belman,
Yes we require power but not by ruining the human life, atmosphere, wild life ete.

Strongly disagree with your all other comments comments. Before you make comments, do you have ever visited the area, Mudarangadi, Santhoor (ash pond), yelloor, kemundale? Do you aware how the coal ash is cooled or what is filled in the ash pond i.e. sea water or potable water? I have been to the ash pond it is sea water. Will you please advise where the sea water from ash pond will evaporate? Definitely to the atmosphere, either absorbed by ground or in air. Do you know the effect of this? Definitely within couple of months all area underground water as well as atmosphere will be contaminated. Yes, your area also. Belman is not far away.
Coming to the gas tycoon issue, will you please put some piece of written evidence? Dear Mr. Belman, don’t write what is in your mind.
Do you have any proof that black water collect from a pond inside UPCL compound? If I want to present a sample of black water, I can do it by mixing coal/ash from home it self. No need to enter illegally inside UPCL.
Why the report of Mangalore based Group of Doctors so far ignore? (News published in Daiji some month back)

Whether UPCL installed FLUE GAS purifier? Mr.Belman, visit to the area with pen and note book, put down all advantage and disadvantage compare it and if you think you are 100%right publish it.

This monthly event of protest by same old people (hardly a dozen or two) against UPCL is tiring. Whole state is suffering from power shortage and these small minded people protest to keep their masters in Dubai happy.

There are gas tycoons in Dubai who wanted gas based plan in Padubidri and when that did not go according to their plan now they send few lakhs rupees to these protesters and they protest to keep their masters happy.

They collect black water from a pond inside UPCL compound (by entering illegally) and say it is from a well from nearby town.

There is a reason why every court in this land has turned down petition from these so called environmentalists against UPCL. They have failed in courts, they have failed in elections (remember election boycott by few villagers?) and now if they think that by showing their hairy chest they can win over public they are living in a la la land.

It's time sponsors of these hairy chest protesters sitting in Dubai realise that UPCL is here to stay and develop Coastal Karnataka.

Raitha Sangha needs to decide...when there is power load shedding, they raise a hue and cry saying their pumpsets need free power...when power generation is being attempted, they don't want it either...they are outright anti development...question is who is sponsoring their activities?

I am wondering why this govt do not want address the legitimate demands of Surroundings area inhabitants of UPCL.What is the reason for the war of words between Raitha Sangha and govt.If UPCL do not want to go a mile when our farmers ready to go 10 miles why on the earth District in charge minister,DC,MLA and most importantly father figure H.E.seer of PEJAVAR don't want try?.Why don't want all concerned sit around the table and sort it for good.Farmers are our brothers and sisters as well as we need UPCL but communication gap why?We need both parties and govt as a mediator sort this problem amicably for the welfare of Karnataka.DVS belongs to that place as he was elected MP of Udupi.Who is holding DVS to reach an amicable solution?
