Mangaluru: Southwest monsoon likely to weaken due to low pressure over Bay of Bengal

Mangaluru, May 27: There is a possibility that the southwest monsoon will weaken as it enters Kerala in a few days due to the low pressure likely to form over the Bay of Bengal within that timeframe.

Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted an early onset of the monsoon due to the El Niño effect. However, the creation of low pressure due to heavy pre-monsoon rains will now weaken the monsoon's arrival.

There have been signs of low pressure formation over the Bay of Bengal in the past week, which could result in a cyclone. As there is a possibility that this low pressure will pass through West Bengal or Bangladesh, its speed will determine the pace of the monsoon.

The monsoon might weaken upon reaching Kerala due to the low pressure. According to weather experts, it might take some more days to pick up pace.

Pre-monsoon rain has also decreased this year. In Karnataka, the deficit of pre-monsoon rain is 10%, while for the coastal region it is 13%, and for the interior regions it is 25%. There are expectations that the shortfall of pre-monsoon rains will be covered by heavy monsoon rains.

In 2023, the monsoon entered Kerala on June 8, nearly a week later than usual. However, last year's monsoon rains were 93% of the usual amount.

Speaking to the media, senior IMD scientist Madhusudhan said, “The monsoon clouds, which will shower rains in India from June to September, are expected to give more rain this year than usual.”
