Udupi, May 27: The department of medical genetics at Kasturba Medical College (KMC) and Hospital recently organized a half-day open day programme aimed at familiarizing attendees with the fundamental concepts of genetics in health and disease. The event featured a variety of interactive games and quizzes designed to engage audiences of all ages, making the learning experience both enjoyable and informative.

In his inaugural address, Dr Sharath K Rao, pro vice chancellor (Health Sciences), MAHE Manipal, highlighted the rapid advancements in the medical field driven by new technologies and research. He emphasized the critical role of genetics as a bridge connecting basic science, research, and clinical services.

A notable highlight of the event was a talk by Dr Ashwin Dalal, head of the diagnostic division at the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad, titled 'ATGS: Cracking the Genetic Code of the Human Genome'. Dr Dalal's presentation provided deep insights into the intricacies of the human genome and the advances in genetic research. and he also said, "The department of medical genetics at KMC is one of the few centers in India dedicated to offering comprehensive services to patients and families affected by rare genetic conditions. Beyond its clinical services, the department is actively engaged in pioneering research, contributing significantly to the field of medical genetics."

The event was graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Dr Padmaraj Hegde, dean of KMC Manipal, Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, and Dr Naveen S Salins, associate dean of KMC Manipal. Dr Anju Shukla, professor and head of the department of medical genetics, welcomed the gathering and provided an overview of the open day programme. Many children/students attended the programme with their parents, actively participating in interactive games and quizzes that made the learning experience both enjoyable and informative.
