Bangalore: Dream Realized as Namma Metro Chugs Off

Bangalore, Oct 20 (IANS): A 6.7 km network, 12 minutes and a significant leap. India's tech hub Bangalore finally came on board the Metro rail Thursday, more than 30 years after the ambitious project was mooted, hoping for an end to its growing traffic woes.

While Bangalore's eight million people will have to wait their turn, about 600 invitees had the privilege of commuting in its three coaches from upscale M.G. Road in downtown to Baiyappannahalli in the eastern suburb.

After launching the service - it can carry 1,000 commuters at a time - at the decked up M.G. Road station with a remote button, Minister for Urban Development Kamal Nath flagged off the first ride. On board were central and state ministers, corporate honchos, top officials and media corps.

Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi, central ministers from Karnataka, including M. Veerappa Moily, Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley and Japanese ambassador Akitaka Saiki were among the dignitaries present on the occasion.

Cost overruns and inordinate delays have bedevilled the project.

Conceived as an alternative transport in the early 80s, the 'Namma Metro' (Our Metro) hopes to give a breather to Bangalore's denizens caught in traffic snarls, potholed roads and poor public transport.

"Reach-1 of the first phase from M.G. Road to Baiyappanhalli will cater to commuters living in the densely populated eastern suburb," Bangalore Metro Rail Corp Ltd (BMRCL) managing director N. Sivasailam told IANS here.

Once the network expands, the 42.3-km double line electrified track in the first phase will snake through the city, with 18.1 km on the east-west corridor and 24.2 km on north-south corridor, including 8.8 km underground in the city centre.

"When the remaining 35.6-km route under construction is completed by 2014, the Metro will become the most sought after commuting mode in the city like in Delhi," a beaming Sivasailam asserted.

But unlike Delhi Metro, this one faced constantly delays.

Although civil works began in 2007 after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone in 2006, Reach-1 was executed in March 2011, 24 months behind schedule.

"We have so far invested about Rs.4,000 crore. Due to various factors, some beyond our control, the total project cost has been revised to Rs.11,609 crore ($2.37 billion) from the estimated Rs.8,158 crore ($1.67 billion dollars)," Sivasailam said.

With the state and federal governments hold 15 percent equity each, the project has 25 percent debt component from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The excitement surrounding the inaugural run is, however, not shared by many citizens, including experts and analysts.

"Reach-1 will not be able to meet the high expectations of the people as the distance is too short to address the dreadful public transport system in an ever-growing metropolis," said M.N. Srihari, advisor to the state government on traffic, transport and infrastructure.

Initially, the corporation will operate five trains in each direction at a frequency of 10-15 minutes to carry about 1,000 commuters per trip from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with fares ranging Rs.10-15.

"Once the service picks up and as more people prefer taking the Metro to save time and commute safely in air-conditioned comfort, we will double the coaches to six from three. We expect about 25,000 people to use the Metro in Reach-1," Sivasailam pointed out.

According to B. Sashikala, 25, who works in an IT multinational at Whitefield, about 20 km from the city centre, it is too early to judge how much difference the Metro would make to people who have got used to personal vehicles in the absence of alternative transport.

"It is nice to know the Metro is getting off the mark finally though the distance covered in Reach-1 is short. The service should have been extended up to Whitefield where several IT and biotech firms operate and thousands of young techies commute daily," Sashikala said.

Joseph F. Gonsalves, Bannur, Puttur / Mangalore i think you haven't moved out from mangalore and puttur at all. Do you know in one of the speech SM Krishna himself appreciated Mr Vajpayeeji for his co-operation towards the introduction of Bangalore Metro. Also you and congress people are no one to comment about Mr Vajpayeeji. Also you comment that i am also having swiss bank account. I would like to say that if i had swiss bank account i would have been a part of your UPA govt by now. I would have not worked in one of the companies in Bangalore.

Dear Mr. Durgadas Suvarna, BLORE/MLORE, I quote your comment:The metro project was sanctioned during AB Vajpayeeji BJP led NDA govt. To be frank the BJP govt should not have invited any congress people during metro inaguaral function as they are no where related to this project. Sonia Gandhi will not go for this metro project it will directly go to her swiss bank account. Unquote.

    Observations from your comments:
    1) The plan for the namma metro project was put forward by former chief Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna and the credit fully goes to him. The bjp led NDA had only approved the project which means a signature was laid on the plan. The required money was sanctioned by Congress led UPA government. A.B. Vajpayee was interested only in samjotha expresses to Pakistan and Bangladesh and from both sides got banged. The wheel chair government couldn’t reach even to Kargil. Hope you will correct your political knowledge of NDA’s pathetic rule for 5 years.

    2) I think you also have Swiss bank account otherwise how do you know Mrs. Sonia Gandhi’s Swiss Bank account?

Sudharsan Shetty, Mangalore/Bangalore very well said. Here Ismail and teamates are sitting in gulf countries and commenting with half knowledge. Their comment clearly indicates that they cannot digest that the namma metro started during the BJP govt rule.

@Louis, Kuwait what a joke from you " Thanks to Mrs. SoniaGandhi for providing funds on time for this project." Your political knowledge is very poor. The metro project was sanctioned during AB Vajpayeeji BJP led NDA govt. To be frank the BJP govt should not have invited any congress people during metro inaguaral function as they are no where related to this project. Also for your kind information funds generated by Sonia Gandhi will not go for this metro project it will directly go to her swiss bank account.

Namma Metro was delayed for 584 days and we the Karnataka people/tax payers got a loss of Rs.29.20 crore due to delays. This was all because of Ex- Chief Minister Mr. Yeddyurappa diverted/threw away money as per his own whims and fancies busy with filling his own pocket.

    FYI: nagesh nayak, bangalore,
Construction work for Phase-1 of the project was scheduled to start in 2005 but was delayed by a February 2006 change of government in the state of Karnataka and continued debate over whether the project was financially feasible and appropriate for the city. Finally, on 25 April 2006 the Indian cabinet approved the project, which was then budgeted at more than 5,400 crore (US$1.2 billion) (Later revised it for 11,609 crore (US$2.59 billion) crore for phase-I).[5] In 2006, Navayuga Engineering was awarded the contract to construct Reach 1 on the East-West line.
The foundation stone for the Phase-1 construction was laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on June 24, 2006,[7] and civil construction on the line between MG Road and Baiyyappanahalli commenced on April 15, 2007

What was the necessity to call a central minister or CM or state minister for inaugaration of Namma Metro. Have they spent money for this project from their own pocket? Whose money, time and energy these leaders are wasting? Can they not ask the chief Engineer or some officer to open the metro services. It is really a shame on the part of these so called leaders to grab cheap publicity at the cost of public exchequer. Hope somebody will file a PIL in supreme court to stop such kind of nonsense once and for all. GOD save the country.

Lancelot N Tauro, Manglore - Doha Qatar and Prashanth, Mangalore/Dubai you guys are sitting in Mangalore and Gulf countries and judging who did the metro rail works of Bangalore. For your poor knowledge the main credit for introduction of Bangalore metro should go to AB Vajpayee and our BJP state govt for actually working on that project with the fast work. SM Krishna did nothing. He was trying to take the credit from that.

@Prashant who told you that Bangalore had IT status only before. Bangalore still has IT status. Also you are no one to comment about AB Vajpayee. Everyone knows the reason why the three terrorists were released. They were released because a terrorist had hijaked the plane as so many innocent indians were travelling in that. It was very difficult for AB Vajpayee to take decision, but at the end saving our innocent indians was most important. So the terrorist had to be released. I will ask you one thing what you would have done if your were in the place of AB Vajpayee and was facing the similar kind of situation?
