Tehran, Oct 21 (IANS): At least five people were drowned Thursday when an Iranian ship carrying 72 passengers sank in the Persian Gulf, Xinhua reported.

According to the Fars news agency, 60 people were rescued, but the fate of seven others was not immedately known.

The ship sank about 24 km off the southern Assaloyeh port, when it was coming from an offshore oil rig, Assaloyeh district governor Abdollah Naderi told Fars.

The region is home to one of the world's largest natural gas fields, the South Pars/North Dome field.
