Mangaluru, Jun 2: Mescom has incurred a loss of Rs 9.63 crore due to damage to its transformers, poles, and other equipment during the pre-monsoon rains accompanied by high-velocity winds.
Mescom operates in the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga. From April 1 to May 31, the most significant damage occurred in Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts due to rain and winds.
In Chikkamagaluru, the loss is estimated at Rs 353.1 lakh, and in Dakshina Kannada, it is Rs 241.72 lakh. In Udupi, Mescom assets worth Rs 200.79 lakh are damaged, while in Shivamogga, equipment worth Rs 167.70 lakh is destroyed.
A total of 5,883 electricity poles were uprooted and broken in the four districts. The district-wise breakdown is as follows: 2,066 poles in Chikkamagaluru, 1,564 in Shivamogga, 1,306 in Dakshina Kannada, and 947 poles in Udupi.
Additionally, 165 transformers were damaged across three districts: 26 in Dakshina Kannada, 20 in Udupi, and 119 in Shivamogga due to heavy rains.
Electricity cables spanning 157.72 km were damaged due to high-velocity winds. In Dakshina Kannada, 65.30 km of cables were damaged, in Udupi 18.56 km, in Chikkamagaluru 41.32 km, and in Shivamogga 31.54 km.
All the affected equipment has been rectified, according to a publication from Mescom.
