Land Grab Row: Home Minister R Ashok Refuses to Quit

Bangalore, Oct 21 (IANS):
Karnataka Home Minister R. Ashok Friday rejected the opposition's demand that he resign after a court ordered the police to probe land grab charges against him.

"It is natural for the opposition to demand resignation. They have done it a thousand times so far," he told reporters here.

Ashoka asserted that his continuing to be home minister would not hamper the police probe into the charges. "I will cooperate fully," he said.

The opposition Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) are seeking his resignation following Thursday's special Lokayukta court judge N.K. Sudhindra Rao's order to police to probe the charges and submit a report by Nov 5.

Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda declined comment on the court order and also on the opposition's demand.

"My stand is that we should not comment on court cases," he told reporters here.

Soon after the court order, leader of opposition Siddaramaiah of the Congress told reporters: "He (Ashok) is the home minister. How can a fair probe take place as long as he remains minister."

JD-S spokesperson Y.S.V. Datta too demanded that Ashok resign to provide a free hand to the police to probe the charges.

Ashok is accused of getting over half-an-acre of government land denotified in 2009 and acquiring it at hugely less than the market price. This is alleged to have caused the state a loss of around Rs.50 crore.

Ashok is the prime accused in the case with B.S. Yeddyurappa who was chief minister in 2009.

The case has been filed by Jayakumar Hiremath, a Bangalore resident who claims he is a social activist. Hiremath has charged that the land in Lottegollahalli in north Bangalore was acquired by the government's Bangalore Development Authority in 1992.

However, Ashok "forced" the owners of the land to seek denotification, "pressured" Yeddyurappa to denotify and bought it at a price hugely less than the market rate.

A similar case had been filed in the Lokayukta court by another Bangalore resident, Manjunath, last year. The court had ordered police to probe but Ashok challenged it in the high court. The case collapsed as Manjunath withdrew the complaint.

Pramod Suvarna, derebail/Mangalore you should have stayed in Somalia then you would have come to know what is somalia and what is our country. Our country will not become like somalia, but the people like you purposefully wish our country to become like somalia as you cannot digest BJP state govt ruling our state. I would say that once you visit somalia and see how the country is. You sitting in mangalore and passing silly comments will not make any sense. I am not the supporter of any political party, because whatever you commented is not of a good taste as per me.

As so many ministers are involved in denotification issue, we have to wait and see whether there is huge Scam in the pipe line. Really it is tough time for BJP and ultimately the people of karnataka yet to learn a lesson. The swamyjis who were blindly supporting BJP are not be seen?

Mr Satish Kunder, Mangalore/Kuwait what about the people like chiddu, sheila madam, chavan. Have they been removed from the kangress party?
The only difference with BJP and kangress is that when BJP people get involve in scam they dont know to hide themselves and as a result they are being caught, but when your secular kangress people get involved in scam they know to hide and show fingers on others because they have been doing that from last 60 years. Also you say that now people in india can efford to buy cars, but there are many india where the people cannot afford to have one day food also. Do you know that?

    Dear Mr. KRISHNARAJ, mangalore

You have been writing your comments targeting congress when the Karnataka Government run by your BJP people have already looted the state to such an extent which may be much more than what congress looted in 60 years. It is shame to all citizens of Karnataka that a chief minister is behind bars for the first time in the history and watch out this Ashok will be behind bars for his misdeeds shortly.

Some people are still are blind about India’s development which is next only to China. BJP people still argue that there is no development for last 60 years. I am 52 years now and seen the days when there was no power, bicycle was considered to be the luxury then. Today middle class people like me can have all the luxuries including owning a car. In the last few years salaries of qualified people have risen in bounds but we only talk only when prices rise which is only natural as price is determined by demand v/s supply.

Having said that India still has poor people and government has to bring the policies which can help them to be above poverty line. NREGA and Food bill act, compulsory Educations are some of the policies in this direction. Tell me Krishnaraj what Karnataka government has done for the poor people except short term measures like Saree and bicycle distribution.

I am against all corrupt people irrespective of any party. If what you said about Congress leaders are true they will go to jail one day. Our judiciary is strong. But if it is only allegation, then all these will become a history like Bofors issue. Fortunately we have well qualified honest people ruling the center which is not the case in Karnataka. Whatever the BJP people say about Sonia Gandhi, she has shown that corruption at any level is not acceptable and taken action against the corrupt people by removing them from the party.

Why BJP is still not able to remove Reddy, Katta and Yeddyurappa from the party? In Karnataka this BJP government will fall one day for all the misdeeds. Here everything is for sale including awards of Karnataka Rajyotsava. Such is the state of corruption in this BJP government!

Dear Home Minister Mr. Ashok Please do not quit the minister post. During the oath taking Mr. Yeddyurappa applied fevicole glue to your chair. This fevicole fixed chair will not separate so easily unless the bjp high command and low command forcibly remove the fevicole glue just like Mr. Yeddyurappa’s. First and foremost apply anticipatory bail to the court. Hope you will get may be or may not be.

Disunity @ peak in BJP under given situation. It is like if shettar camp's one minister fixed in the corruption scandal then Eddy camp also searching for a prospective fix of minister.Ashok from Shettar and waiting in Murgesh Nirani from Eddy's camp. Both camps has a task to establish who is who!!!!If the situation worsens day by day like this, then certainly there could not be any expected expand of ministry as it seems a JINX whenever BJP sets the date for expansion there will be a issue which creates a situation as not conducive to go ahead.

This news showing the revolution in karnataka politics. In next election you can see all new BJP faces in karnataka government. And all un experience ministers to rule our karnataka.
Because some of current BJP Ministers , MLA's are already in Jail and rest of them are in que of parappana agrahara. Due to this no experience BJPian will remain to face next election. Our karnataka peoples are mad and crazy ... they again elect BJP and give new chance to loot karnataka.. This will never end until educated , clever kannadiga's learn a good lesson from these froudy BJPians.
Our people very well know BJPians are looters, cheaters, criminals ... But again we are ing them as our servant.. Its really shame on each kannadiga's who vote to BJPians...

Is any morality and legality in continuing R Ashok as our Home Minister?I think, eventually he will yield to oppn and his party low command. The thing is hear how long he will tolerate shame and damage to his personality.Industry Minister Murgesh Nirani waiting for next turn.....It is the matter of time Karnataka Govt's Council of Ministers running short of ministers who may (most) land in Parapana Agrahara !!!
