Mangaluru, Jun 4: The department of oral & maxillofacial pathology and oral microbiology of AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences celebrated 'World No Tobacco Day' on May 31 in the school premises of NITTE PU College. The presence of chief guest led the programme.

Anupam Agrawal, police commissioner of Mangaluru city, and vice principal Prof (Dr) Mithra N Hegde presided over the program. A team of dental students headed by Prof (Dr) Sreelatha SV [HOD] from ABSMIDS participated in the event. The students of NSAM PU college were encouraged to participate in e-poster and essay writing competitions. The chief guest, Anupam Agrawal, gave a speech and highlighted the problems and consequences faced by the people who consume tobacco. NSAM College principal Naveen Shetty addressed the students on the ill effects of tobacco. A skit was performed by 3rd-year dental students on the theme 'Protecting Children From Tobacco Industry Interference', which was highly applauded by all.

Prof (Dr) Sreelatha SV, head of oral pathology, addressed the youth against tobacco and the precarious consequences of tobacco use. Dr Preethesh Shetty was the programme coordinator. The event helped a lot in contributing knowledge and awareness to the youth, especially teenagers who often find themselves in the trap of smoking and consuming tobacco directly or indirectly. The day was a huge success.
