Mangaluru, Jun 10: Tension gripped Boliyar on Sunday following a violent incident in which two BJP workers were stabbed during a verbal feud outside a bar. The incident occurred near Boliyar, under the jurisdiction of the Konaje police station, and has left the community on edge.
The injured victims were rushed to a hospital in Deralakatte, where one is reported to be in stable condition, while the other is undergoing surgery.
The altercation took place during a victory procession organized by the Bollar BJP gram samiti to celebrate the swearing-in of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister and the recent electoral victory of Capt Brijesh Chowta in the Lok Sabha elections. The procession route stretched from Chelur to Dharmanagara via Boliyar.
According to police, three BJP followers were passing in front of the Boliyar mosque when they allegedly shouted provocative slogans. This incited a group of 20-25 Muslim youths on motorcycles to follow them. The three BJP followers stopped in front of a bar about two kilometres ahead of the mosque, and the Muslim youths followed them there. A confrontation ensued, during which all three BJP supporters were attacked, and two were stabbed.
The victims have been identified as Harish (41), son of Mutappa Poojary from Innoli, and Nandakumar (24), son of Kotiyappa from Innoli Padavu. The third BJP supporter, Krishna Kumar, also from Innoli and the son of Kotiyappa Poojary, was beaten and has since filed a complaint.
The Konaje police are actively investigating the incident, and security has been tightened in the area to prevent further escalation of violence.
