Mangaluru, Jun 10: ‘Care for our Common Home’ is the mission that the Centre for Environmental Concern of St Aloysius PU College has undertaken as it strives to foster environmental awareness and responsibility in the student community. The celebration of World Environment Day was an initiative to remind the staff and students of the collective responsibility that we share in safeguarding our natural resources for future generations.
The celebration began with the Beach Cleaning Campaign at Kasaba Bengre. Collaborating with the Plastics For Change Foundation, the ECO Warriors engaged in collecting litter, debris, and other pollutants and segregating recyclable and non-recyclable waste.
The activities of the CEC for 2024-25 were formally inaugurated by Jayanthi, senior coordinator-programmes, Plastics For Change, who emphasized on the effects of single use plastic in environment in her address. During the event, the CEC members, along with faculty and guests, discussed and passed four key resolutions aimed at fostering an eco-friendly campus. Some of the resolutions are Go Plastic-free, Unplug Each Night and Save Water. Following the inauguration, a tree-planting ceremony was held in the presence of the Principal Rev Fr Clifford Sequeira and the coordinators. This hands-on activity aimed at highlighting the significance of afforestation and every individual’s role in combating climate change.
In addition to these activities, the CEC members were given the opportunity to prepare educational materials for value education classes. This initiative aims to instill environmental values in students, ensuring that the principles of sustainability and ecological responsibility are woven into the fabric of their education.
Furthermore, in a bid to ensure responsible management and regeneration of natural resources, the institution has made significant strides by installing solar panels and setting up a rainwater recovery facility. These installations not only provide renewable energy and conserve water but also serve as practical demonstrations of sustainable practices for the students.
Through these comprehensive efforts, the Centre for Environmental Concern at St Aloysius PU College exemplifies a holistic approach to environmental stewardship, fostering a culture of sustainability that is poised to make a lasting impact on both the local community and the broader world.
