Mangaluru: Carmel School conducts election

Mangaluru, Jun 12: Carmel School conducted its school parliament election for the posts of captain and vice-captain on June 10, to promote a democratic style of school leadership and encourage students to be good sailors while cruising through the ocean of life.

Students underwent different stages and processes like real-life political elections. Four candidates were shortlisted to contest the election: Siona and Akshaj of grade 10 for the post of captain and Prishan and Aysha Manha of grade 9 for the post of vice-captain.

They were provided a platform to put forth their agendas through election campaign speeches from class to class and during the morning assembly. The balloting was conducted at various election booths systematically set up in different classrooms, with students from grades 6 to 10 eligible to vote.

Teachers validated the exercise of their vote by applying indelible ink on the left index fingernail to prevent duplicate voting. The confidentiality of voting and the transparency of procedures were maintained at all stages of the election.

In the auditorium, students from grades 6 to 10 gathered as Lidwin and Zeena read out the names, with Jahnavi marking the tallies and Akshatha assisting. The event was conducted in the presence of the esteemed principal. After the votes were counted the principal officially declared the election results: Akshaj of grade 10 was elected as captain, and Aysha Manha of grade 9 as vice-captain for the academic year 2024-25. In her congratulatory address, Sr Lilly Pushpa, the principal, gave a clarion call to the newly elected leaders to put the needs of others first and to help their schoolmates develop and perform to the best of their abilities. This election not only nurtured a sense of accountability among the students but also laid the foundation for a cooperative and inclusive school environment.
