Madikeri, Oct 24: Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Udupi Pejavar Mutt has justified the meeting of a few Swamijis and religious leaders with former Chief Minister, B S Yeddyurappa in jail, stating that religious personalities are not barred from meeting jailed people.
He was answering queries relating to criticisms aimed at religious head of Sri Siddhaganga Mutt Tumkur, Dr Shivakumara Swamiji and other mutt heads, who had met Yeddyurappa in jail.
The Swamiji was speaking to news persons who met him at his camp at Lord Bhagandeshwara Temple in Bhagamandala in the district on Sunday October 23.
“I am aware that Yeddyurappa has been arrested for his alleged involvement with corrupt activities. His guilt is not yet been declared by the court. There is nothing wrong if one meets people facing allegations to provide them moral support,” he opined.
He pointed out that in the country’s history, various leaders have met people facing allegations including some who were given death sentences. “Providing moral support and guiding people towards the path of righteousness does not need anyone’s approval or nod,” he felt.
About the scandals of corruption that are regularly surfacing in Karnataka and elsewhere, the Swamiji said that corruption should be rooted out. He hastened to add that the fate of people charged with corruption should be allowed to be decided by courts alone, and no outside interference is needed. He also extended his best wishes to the Rath Yatra planned by BJP leader, L K Advani, to create awareness among the people against corrupt activities.
