Kiran Bedi to Return Excess Money to Organisers

New Delhi, Oct 24 (IANS): Following allegations that she had inflated travel expenses when invited by NGOs for seminars, Team Anna member Kiran Bedi Monday said members of her trust had instructed her travel agent to return the excess amount to the hosts.

The trustees of Bedi's India Vision Foundation have further asked her to strictly travel as per invite.

"Trustees have instructed the travel agent to return the balance amounts forthwith," Bedi said on microblogging site Twitter.

Controversy erupted following a report in the Indian Express that she sometimes charged business class tickets while travelling economy class.

The daily claimed to be in possession of bills, invoices and copies of cheques which show that the former cop, who is entitled to a rebate on Air India tickets as a gallantry award winner, pays discounted fares but charges her host institutions the full fare.

Bedi had said in her defence that there was no personal gain.

"The organisations voluntarily pay me for business class tickets but I duly inform them and save money for travels which are for good causes but cannot provide remuneration... there is no personal gain."

    DEAR MADUM KIRAN BEDI, WHETHER THERE WAS PERSONAL GAIN OR NOT,WHAT YOU HAD DONE IS NOT CORRECT.WHEN YOUR DEEDS WERE EXPOSED YOU JUSTIFIED IT AND NOW YOUR TRUST MEMBERS(NOT YOU) INSTRUCT YOUR TRAVEL AGENT TO RETURN THE EXCESS AMOUNT TO THE HOST.IF THE EXCESS AMOUNT IS RETURNED,WHETHER YOUR DEEDS BECOME MORALLY CORRECT? I APPRICIATE YOUR TRUST MEMBERS, ATLEAST THEY HAVE SOME MORAL ETHICS,BUT WHAT ABOUT YOU? I ESPECT THE RESPECTED ANNA TEAM TO BE HONEST, ETHICALLY UPRIGHT,DIGNIFIED IN THEIR DECISION AND IMPARTIAL WITH REGARD TO CORUPTION. LET THIS MOVEMENT BE AN ANTI CORUPTION MOVEMENT AND NOT ANTI CONGRESS OR ANTI BJP OR ANTI POLITICAL PARTY MOVEMENT. IF NOT THE CRADIBILITY OF THE ENTIRE TEAM WILL BE QUESTIONED AND THE MOVEMENT MAY LOOSE ITS GOAL AND PURPOSE.
