Mangaluru, Jun 14: Dr Ronald Colaco, an NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist, was honoured with the ‘Mangaluru Press Club Guest of Honour’ award at the Mangaluru Press Club on Friday, June 14.

In his acceptance speech, Dr Colaco expressed gratitude to the district journalists' union for the recognition and reminisced about his early college days in Bengaluru.

He said, "Parents often have specific colleges in mind where they wish their children to study. However, it is more about our mindset and the hard work we put in. Everyone should have a dream, but it is equally important to work hard, stay dedicated, and strive to fulfill those dreams.

"I have always believed in giving back to society. At my wedding, I made a commitment that a portion of my resources would be dedicated to helping the needy and supporting social causes. Over the past 31 years, regardless of religion, I have contributed to society because humanity comes first.

"When we are born, we do not belong to any particular religion; it is society that introduces us to religious differences. It is disheartening to see the current atmosphere where political benefits and polarizing statements are used to divide society," he added.

Dr Colaco also remarked, "Whenever we want to achieve something, we should not always depend on the government; we should see what we can give back to society. Even a small contribution can make a significant difference and help fulfill demands. This is a lesson I learned from my father, who has been my inspiration since childhood.

"Mangaluru has great potential for tourism, where we could develop it into a mini Dubai. We need to create resorts and other attractions that draw tourists, generate employment, and boost the economy. For tourism development in Mangaluru, we need to change the atmosphere, as the region has become challenging for investors due to communal sensitivities. There is a need to bring about communal harmony in the district, and the media plays a crucial role in achieving this,” he said.

Earlier in the event, Rons Bantwal, president of the Kannadiga Patrakartara Sangha Maharashtra State and president of the Karnataka Working Journalist Union Maharashtra State Unit, inaugurated the award ceremony.

In his address, Bantwal said, "I have shared a close bond with Dr Ronald Colaco for the past three and a half decades. He has been a guiding force for me. Dr Colaco is a role model for everyone due to his kind personality. Despite living abroad, he has never forgotten his birthplace, and his contributions to society are immense."

He also expressed his gratitude to Walter Nandalike, managing director of Daijiworld media, for his constant support in his personal and professional growth.

Ronald Colaco’s wife Jean Colaco, MLC Ivan D Souza, president of District Working Journalist Union Srinivas Nayak Indaje, president of Patrika Bhavan Trust Ramakrishna R, general secretary Ibrahim Adkastala, programme convenor Jithendra Kundeshwara and others were present.

P B Harish Rai welcomed the gathering. R C Bhat compered the event.
