BJP’s 'jizya' charge at Cong after Karnataka govt hikes fuel prices

New Delhi, Jun 15 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lashed out at Siddaramaiah government for increasing petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3 per litre in Karnataka and equated it with 'jizya', a tax imposed on the citizens during the Mughal era.

The party also hit out at the AAP government for hiking electricity tariff in Punjab for domestic as well as industrial users and said that the INDIA bloc governments are looting the common people after making the states 'bankrupt'.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla took to X and accused the Congress of double standards on issues like price-rise.\

The Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government announced increase in the sales tax on petrol and diesel which came into immediate effect across the state.

The petrol retail sales tax has been hiked by 3.9 per cent from 29.84 per cent from 25.92 per cent.

The diesel retail sales tax has been increased by 4.1 per cent from 14.34 per cent to 18.44 per cent.

Lashing out at the grand old party, Poonawalla said that Congress complains of inflation and price rise and then raises prices of petrol and diesel the states where it is in power.

"Diesel prices have been raised by Rs 3.50 per litre while petrol by Rs 3 per litre. This is anti-farmer and anti-common man step," he wrote.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi ensured that the excise duty on fuel was cut multiple times while gas cylinders were made cheaper but Congress is imposing jizya for its policies after bankrupting the state of Karnataka," he further stated.

Poonawalla further claimed that the state was paying the price of Congress' dangerous tactics as its treasury stands emptied now.

Notably, the Congress rode to power in Karnataka on the back of five guarantees, thereby entailing a whopping expense of roughly Rs 50,000-Rs 60,000 crore annually for its implementation. Karnataka CM recently held a series of review meetings to discuss ways to increase revenue collection.

Five poll guarantees promised by the Congress included -- free travel for women across the state, 200 units of free power, Rs 2,000 per month allowance for each female head of the family, Rs 10 kg of food grains to BPL families, Rs 3,000 per month for two years to unemployed graduates.

Why the bhakts getting so much worried about the hike. They were ready to pay even Rs. 500 per litre in the name of development. Let the Andh Bhakths govt at the centre reduce the excise duty to help their bhakths in Karnataka.

Guys, I am from the minority and can classify myself as lower middle class. So not a BPL card holder. I am not entitiled to any of the guarantees. Reason being, My average electricity bill is higher and my son is working. He has his own family. We are retired and we never use the Govt bus service. So I bear the brunt of higher unit charges and other taxes that have been increased to fund these freebies. Now above that this fuel price will result in increase accross the board even for essential commodities. I think this is not fair for supporting or voting such a Govt. For sure there are many like me.

If we see last 5 years of ruling by BJP full of corruption, price rise, communalism and hate towards minorities. No benefits for poor and middle class. The guarantees promised by congress in karnataka brought some hope in people so they voted for congress. But again majority people misguided by andhabakth and gujjus prepared communal, hate, bond scams and corrupt BJP and shown they don't need guarantees and bothered about price rise and happy with communal politics. And congress should stop the unwanted gender discrimination guarantees and implement genuine requirement guarantees, At the end of game poor and common people suffers and polititions enjoy. Hope people realise and vote wisely for the welfare of all citizens and in the interest of nation.

Govt has the right to levy cess on petrol and diesel. However, prices in Karnataka for these are already among the highest in the country. So what is the rational behind this move. There will be cascading effect on the states economy which will make products more expensive and less competitive. Higher tax does not mean higher revenue. If people reduce consumption by more than 3% it will hit harder for states finances. Govt should be reducing taxes to increase demand and therefore to increase revenue. But, who will tell thick heads.

When the guarantees were announced and congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewal was asked from where the money will come, he said congress will get the money by stopping the 40% commission and the saved money will be used for the guarantees. So now why the fuel price is increased to fund the guarantees? Either there was no 40% commission during BJP rule as been accused by congress or the 40% commission is ramant now in congress rule.

This is completely cheating the people of karnataka, unplanned free facility announcement and now giving trouble to middle class citizens. If you don't have fund stop providing free services and facilities. All politician are same. They and their family want seat nothing else.
