Mangaluru: Bajal underpass turns into 'swimming pool' yet again amid heavy rains

Mangaluru, Jun 26: Due to heavy rain, the Bajal underpass has been submerged, causing pedestrians and motorists to struggle to pass through the area.

This is not the first time the Bajal underpass has been flooded; every year, it turns into a 'swimming pool' during the rainy season.

Despite being submerged for several years, local representatives have failed to resolve the issue.

Two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws are forced to take pedestrian routes to bypass the Bajal underpass.

Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner C L Anand visited the spot to assess the situation.

    If the Engineer and contractor is arrested and produced before court of law for criminal punishment for misuse of Taxpayers money. Such instances will never repeat and the true culprits will be exposed as well. Unfortunate this will never happen and this will go on and on….

    Hats off to the engineer in first place and then the contractor who has executed the work .. just put one round in corporation and I bet you cannot find one sensible engineer there .. everyone has come through reservations and not via their merit or capability and regarding contractor what much can be said the lowest bidder in tender process gets the work .. This MAN MADE BLUNDER is a perfect example and I must admit that Nanthoor Flyover still remains a classic example set in Mangalores history :)

    Mangalore is great. This one minor underpass in BAJAL is always submerged during rainy season since many many years. No solution found. New joke is a that a larger UNDER PASS is on the way to be constructed at NANTHOOR JUNCTION as informed by the officials. This may stretch from KPT JUNCTION to PUMPWELL. Can you imagine what will be the fate if submerged. Even god will not be able to help. Authorities kindly keep a permanent life boat and rescue team ready as contingency. Do not panic later.

    From Smart City the name should be changed as BOLLA CITY as most our our roads are flooded with water. Our Distriict Administration and MCC authorities are sleeping like Kumbakarna on such important issues.

    This is exactly what they are implementing at nanthoor junction and work has started. The road padua high school to pumpwell side will be below and the bikarnakatte to nanthoor will be at ground level( similar to the railway track here).Our elected reps dont care and some unrelated public persons are putting pressure on the authorities to implement this without thinking about the consequences. When this foolish project is starts expect nanthoor junction to be swimming pool and the serious mudslides near the nathoor bus stand /kaibattal side and the hill at nanthoor.

    Dear VMD, MANGALORE, Nanthoor is still ok because it is at a height compared to all the neighboring areas. The lowest point of the underbridge is the lowest height compared to any area around that under bridge. Water will have to be constantly pumped. It is such a design flaw. The closest is pumpwell, which is also at the lowest height compared say Kankanady, Yekkur, Capitanio and then towards Karnataka bank side. But I concur with you that Nanthoor will get lot worse before it will get better, because it is not the nature that is at play but the human.

    Now 2nd swimming pool after Emmejere swimming pool near Mangaladevi. Smart city gift to Mangalore. Now after the full rain session starts, Mangalore will be number 1st swimming pool city in the world.

    Yeah...this is must visit site to witness man made wonder every monsoon. I am sure his predecessor also visited this site. Scratch a little bit and he will know that his jurisdiction stops as soon as he sets foot on railway property and its decision is made far away from Mangalore and in a different state. By the time, the news of this deluge reaches the headquarters, monsoon is long gone.
