Mangaluru, Jun 26: Amid growing concerns about environmental degradation and the urgent need for sustainable practices, community initiatives like plantation drives play a crucial role in preserving the natural ecosystems. Trees not only enhance the beauty of the surroundings but also provide numerous ecological benefits, including air purification, climate regulation, and habitat restoration for wildlife. Engaging in tree planting activities fosters a sense of responsibility towards the environment and contributes significantly to the fight against climate change.
CEC, Eco Club, and NSS members of St Aloysius PU College enthusiastically participated in a plantation drive organized by the forest department, Mangaluru division, Bantwal range. At the Salumarada Thimmakka tree park in Mudanadugodu, students had a chance to explore the park before heading to the forest site for a demonstration on planting saplings.
The event aimed to cultivate fruit-producing plants to prevent wild animals from encroaching on residential areas, a strategy that also helps restore the natural habitat of these animals. Many nature lovers, environmentalists, and locals also participated in the plantation drive. The students were divided into six teams, each supervised by a teacher, with designated spaces allocated to each group.
At the end of the day, the participants engaged in reflection and assessed the activities throughout the day. Anil K, DRFO, Bantwal range, addressed the students, emphasizing the importance of their efforts. He further stressed that students must promote afforestation and encourage their family members to do the same. Students also shared their experiences of taking up and participating in the plantation initiative.
Mark Pereira thanked all the participants and the forest officials for the successful plantation drive. Pramila Patrao, Diana Mary Joseph, Shwetha V R, Shreyanka. Moily, Rakshitha Shetty, and Mark Pereira, the faculty members of the college, accompanied the students.
The plantation drive not only provided a hands-on learning experience for the students but also highlighted the collective effort required to combat environmental challenges. Such initiatives inspire communities to take active roles in preserving and nurturing the environment, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. Through the dedicated efforts of the students, teachers, and forest officials, the event successfully contributed to the ecological balance and fostered a deeper appreciation for nature among all participants.
